Description	:	Jack Richard Smith was one of six children born to the marriage of Harold and Helen (Petty) Smith on February 2, 1931, in Nelson, Nebraska. Jack passed away in Nelson on November 24, 1988, at the age of 57 years, 9 months and 22 days. Read More	Jack Richard Smith was one of six children born to the marriage of Harold and Helen (Petty) Smith on February 2, 1931, in Nelson, Nebraska. Jack passed away in Nelson on November 24, 1988, at the age of 57 years, 9 months and 22 days. Jack spent much of his life in the Nelson area, graduating from Nelson High School, but he had lived in Poway, California, Oregon City, Oregon, and Cozad. He served his country during the Korean conflict obtaining the rank of sargeant (sic) in the United States Marine Corps. When Jack returned from the service he married June E. Troutt on February 2, 1954, in Fairbury, Nebraska. This marriage was blessed with four children...two boys Jay and James Scott and two girls Jerri and Jackie. He was baptized and attended the Methodist Church in Nelson. Jack was a member of the Nelson V.F.W. and American Legion Posts. For a number of years he operated Smith's Cafe. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Don and Gene, and his father. Survivors include his loving wife, June; two sons, Jay of Sacramento, California, and James Scott of Oregon City, Oregon; two daughters, Mrs. Juan (Jerri) Padron of Oregon City, Oregon, and Mrs. Koby (Jackie) Atkins, of Mayer, Arizona; a foster daughter, Mrs. Randy (Cindy) Schneider and her family; his mother, Helen of Nelson; two brothers, Dale of Plantation, Florida; one sister, Mrs. Willard (Joan) Crandell of Elwood; six grandchildren, as well as friends and patrons from the cafe. Memorial services were held Tuesday, November 29, 1988, at 10:30 a.m. from the Klawitter-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Nelson with Pastor Steve Tjarks officiating. Ruth Watts, soloist, sang "The Lord's Prayer", with Jan Schnitker as organist and accompanist. Pallbearers were Jay Smith, Scott Smith, Juan Padron, Koby Atkins, Randy Schneider and Willard Crandell. Burial with full military rites was in the Nelson Cemetery. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home of Nelson was in charge of the arrangements.
