The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, November 24, 1983; pg. 14 =============== Gene Oliver Smith, one of six children of Harold and Helen (Petty) Smith, was born on February 12, 1922, in Nelson, Nebraska, and passed away November 19, 1983, at the Veterans Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 61 years, 9 months and 7 days. Gene was baptized at a young age in Clay Center, Nebraska. He attended the Nelson Grade School and the Clay Center High School, graduating with the Class of 1941. He served his country during World War II from December of 1941 to November 1945 in the Navy. March 10, 1946, he was married to Nadine Klawitter. This union was blessed with one daughter, Lea Ann. Nadine passed away March 5, 1980. On May 16, 1981, at Salem Lutheran Church, he was married to Elsie Wehnes Troudt. Gene was an avid golfer and spent many hours on the golf course with his friends. He enjoyed bowling and sponsored the Smith's Cafe team. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Nelson, Masonic Lodge #77, Tehamah Shrine of Hastings, VFW and American Legion of Nelson, Eagles Lodge #3101 and a charter member of Elks Lodge #2197. Preceding Gene in death were his wife, Nadine, his father and one brother, Donald Smith. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and a friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife, Elsie; his daughter, Lea Ann and her husband, Mike Holsteen of Shoreview, Minnesota; a step-son, Steve Troudt, and his wife, Debbra, of Deweese; his mother, Helen Smith of Nelson; three brothers, Dale of Tucson, Arizona, Jack of Canby, Oregon, and David of Plantation, Florida; a sister, Joan, and her husband, Willard Crandell of Cozad; two grandchildren, Christa and Kelly Holsteen; two step-grandchildren, Jodi and Justin Troudt. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 22, at 2 p.m. from the United Methodist Church, Nelson, with Rev. Paul Samuelson and Rev. David Miller officiating. Organist, Jan Schnitker, accompanying Alfred and Janell Hanson, they sang "Amazing Grace". Burial with Masonic Rites by Nelson Masonic Lodge No 77, and Military Rites by Nelson VFW and American Legion Posts, was in the Nelson Cemetery. Casketbearers were Alvin Schott, Mike Goslin, Paul Schutte, Jon Littrell, Roy Dugan and Wayne Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Jake Chapman, LeRoy Schott, Orie Farver, Clem Reeve, Jack Wehrman, Ira Adams and Robert Sweenie. Arrangements were by Klawitter-Prie Funeral Home, Nelson.
