His last hospitalization began on January 7. Mr. Smith was a native of Nelson and had, with the exception of short residences in Clay Center and Superior, with his parents, lived all of his life here until he and his family moved to Grand Island in July 1954. He was associated with his father-in-law, the late Fred C. Wullenwaber, in the grocery business here and also had engaged in the restaurant business in Nelson. He was employed in the sales department of a national soap firm when the family moved to Grand Island. Surviving are his wife, the former Ilene Wullenwaber, two sons, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith of Nelson, four brothers, Gene of Nelson, Dale of Hayward, Calif., Jack of Geneva, and David of Norfolk, and a sister, Mrs. Joan Crandall of Cozad. The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, February 21, 1957 ================ John Donald Smith, son of Helen and Harold Smith, passed away Feb. 20, at St. Francis Hospital, Grand Island, Nebr., after a lingering illness at the age of 32 years, 3 months and 29 days. Don was born in Nelson Oct. 22, 1924 and spent the greatest share of his childhood days here. Don graduated from Nelson high school in the spring of 1942. On March 4, 1945, he was united in marriage to Ilene Wullenwaber. This marriage was blessed with two children, Frederich Harold and Jay Don. For many years Don was associated with the Wullenwaber Market in Nelson and the Nelson Fire Department. When Don moved to Grand Island he became representative of the Colgate-Palmolive Company. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church and also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The high esteem in which he was held by his fellow workers is shown by the following paragraph taken from a letter sent to all fellow salesmen and supervisors by his district manager: "Don was one of the finest men I have known, and I know you feel the same way. His character was beyond reproach. He was a hard, efficient worker with 125 percent company loyality. To merely say that Don will be missed would be a gross understatement." He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Ilene and two children, Freddy, 9, and Jay, 1; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith of Nelson; a sister, Mrs. Willard Crandell of Cozad; and four brothers, Gene of Nelson, Dale of Hayward, Calif., Jack of Geneva, and David of Norfolk, and a host of relatives and friends.
