Plans were in the making at Cherokee for a family reunion and Mr. Bunn in company with his wife and daughter were speeding toward Cherokee from their home in Los Angeles, but all came to an end when life slipped from the body of Mr. Bunn as they neared the town of Caliente, Nevada. An indication of the confidence placed in him by his fellow men is the fact that he served as county supervisor from this district from 1893 to 1904 at which time he resigned and moved to California. But as county supervisor is not the only way that Mr. Bunn served his country in defense of the Union cause, enlisting in 1864 as a member of Company A, 44th Iowa Infantry. He went south to Tennessee and Mississippi where he did guard duty serving for about four months or until after the term of his enlistment. He was honorably discharged at Davenport, Iowa, in October 1864. He was a charter member of the William Baker Post of the G.A.R. at Correctionville and its commander for a term, later transferring his membership to Stanton Post in Los Angeles. Jacob A. Bunn was born in Berkhampstead, England, January 1, 1843. With his parents he came to America in 1852. After living four years near Cleveland, Ohio, they moved to Dubuque Co., Iowa. About fifteen years later he came to Ida County. On September 7, 1871, he was married to Miss Frances Ann Pearson. Nearly all of their years were spent in Iowa on their farm in Woodbury County. Mr. Bunn rendered his county efficient service as supervisor for several years. In 1904 he resigned this office, disposed of his farm and moved to Seattle. For about fifteen years his home has been in Los Angeles. Mr. Bunn had been in ill health for a long time. Recently he expressed a great desire to return once more to his old home and friends. Enroute home he passed away at 12:30 a.m. August 26, on a Union Pacific train near Caliente, Nevada. Besides his wife, Mr. Bunn is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Chris Mundy of Cherokee, Mrs. J.E. Kissinger of Washta and Mrs. Charles Walters of Rice Lake, Minnesota; one son, George G. of Los Angeles; one brother, John Bunn of Cherokee; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The body arrived in Cherokee Friday evening accompanied by his wife and son, George, and daughter, Mrs. Mundy. A brief service was held at Appleyard and Wallace's Undertaking Parlors at one o'clock Sunday August 31. At 3 o'clock the funeral was held at Good Hope church, Woodbury County, the address being made by Rev. Thutt of the Cherokee Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in the Good Hope Cemetery. PAST & PRESENT OF WOODBURY COUNTY: Jacob A. Bunn, who since 1893 has continually filled the office of county supervisor, a fact which is indicative of the trust and confidence reposed in him by his fellow men, is now living a retired life in Pierson, but for many years he was actively engaged in business as a farmer and contractor. He has resided in Iowa since 1855 and in Woodbury County since 1874. He is a native of England, his birth having occurred in Burkamstead near London, on January 1, 1844, a son of James Bunn, also a native of England. The father crossed the Atlantic about 1850 and established his home near Cleveland, Ohio. About 1855 he came to Iowa, settling in Dubuque County and there Jacob A. was reared, acquiring a good education in the common and high schools. He was just twenty years old when he offered his services to the country in defense of the Union cause, enlisting in 1864 as a member of Co. A, 44th Iowa Infantry. He went south to Tennessee and Mississippi, where he did guard duty, serving for about four months or until after the close of his term of enlistment. He was then honorably discharged at Davenport, Iowa, in October 1864. Upon his return home Mr. Bunn began work at the carpenter and joiner's trade and in 1869 he removed to Ida County where he continued the work of carpentering until 1874. He then came to Woodbury county and located on a farm and in addition to general agricultural pursuits he engaged in business as a contractor and builder, erecting school houses in this county and building county bridges and schoolhouses in Cherokee and Ida counties. His attention was directed to the dual pursuit for several years. He then bought additional land in Ida County, where he opened up a farm and later he bought land in Union township, Woodbury County, establishing his home thereon in 1874. He had 200 acres and from time to time he added to this property until he owned 2,628 acres, but he has since deeded his son 120 acres in Union Township, his daughter Cora May 160 acres in Dakota and Mary J. a like amount in Dakota. He now owns 524 acres of rich and arable land, yielding to him a golden tribute. He has good buildings and improvements upon his place, in fact, he added to his farm all modern equipments and accessories and transformed the land into most productive fields. In 1899 he removed to Pierson, purchasing a lot on which he built a residence. Later he sold that property and built where he now resides, having just completed a modern and comfortable home which stands on a tract of 63 acres of land. Mr. Bunn was married in Cherokee Co., Iowa, September 3, 1872, to Miss Frances A. Pearson, a native of Livingston Co., Illinois, born near Pontiac, and a daughter of Moses H. and Mary Jane (Pindell) Pearson. Moses Pearson was born in New Hampshire and became one of the early settlers of Illinois. He was married in the latter state to Miss Mary Jane Pindell, a native of Brown Co., Ohio. Mr. Pearson removed to Iowa about 1854, settling in Woodbury County and within its boundaries he developed several farms. On more than one occasion he was driven out by Indians and he later took up his abode in Cherokee County. He is now living in Wyoming where he is identified with agricultural interests. Pearson Creek was named in his honor as was also the town of Pierson, though the name is spelled differently. Mr. and Mrs. Bunn are the parents of five children: Mary Jane, who is now the wife of Chris Mundy, a resident farmer of Cherokee County, by whom she has two children, George A. and James; Cora, wife of Edward Kissinger, a resident farmer of Union Township, by whom she has three children, Mile James, Nellie Florence and Martha Frances; Washington Andrew, who died at the age of four: George who is now a student in Montana, Florence, the wife of Charles Walters, a farmer of Union Township by whom she has one son, Arthur. Politically Mr. Bunn is a Republican where national issues are involved, but at local levels does not consider himself bound by party ties. He was elected and served as township school treasurer, as trustee and director and in 1893 was elected supervisor of the county and has served continuously since, being chairman of the board for three years. He is the only member that has served continuously throughout this period. He belongs to the Grand Army post at Correctionville and was its commander for one term.
