The family will be present to receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Jake was born Aug. 2, 1923, on the family farm in rural Fairfield, the son of Marie and Samuel Shafer. He married D. Joan Heston of Libertyville. Joan preceded him in death on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009. Jake and his wife Joan were well known as business partners in Mt. Pleasant and around Southeastern Iowa. They started their life-long business partnership with one of the first Ferguson tractor dealerships in the country in 1946. During the 1960s this business evolved into Shafer Ford with headquarters in Mt. Pleasant and stores in Fairfield, Washington and Wapello. This business grew into one of the largest Ford Tractor dealerships in the country. In the 1970s and 80s, Shafer was the dealer for American Motors, Jeep, Chrysler and International trucks. During this time he was also the pre-delivery center for International/Bluebird school buses. Retiring in the late 80s, Jake and Joan built J & J Camping west of Mt. Pleasant. Jake was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce during his entire business career in Mt. Pleasant, and many other clubs and organizations. Survivors include three children, daughter Judith Sorensen and her husband Jack of San Antonio, Texas, son Jerry and wife Cyndy Shafer of Lafayette, Ind., and daughter Jayne Jordan of Eldon; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and his younger brother Wesley and his wife Nonie of rural Fairfield. Memorials have be established to the First United Methodist Church, the Alzheimer's Association or the American Cancer Society.
