He enlisted as a 19 yr. old resident of Oakland, Louisa Co., Ia. on July 16,1861 in Co. C, 5th Iowa Infantry. He was promoted from the ranks Dec.20,1863 to 5th Sgt. of Co. C. He re-enlisted Jan.5,1864, was consolidated Aug.8,1864 and transferred Sept.18,1864 as 4th Corp. to Co. G, 5th Iowa Cavalry. Mustered out Aug.11,1865 at Nashville, Tn.
