B ANOTHER CIVIL WAR VETERAN PASSES INTO GREAT BEYOND Henry Harrison Martin was born November 2, 1840, in Montgomery County, Indiana, being the tenth of a family of eleven children, one girl and ten boys, all of whom have now passed on except one brother, Frank, born to Evi and Anna Martin, and passed away at his home in Center Point, Iowa, Friday morning, July 24, 1925, aged 84 years, 8 months and 22 days. He came to Linn county, Iowa in 1854 with his parents and worked on his father's farm until the call to arms came in 1861, walking there from Center Point. Being unassigned Mr. Martin re-enlisted on June 7, 1862 in the 18th Iowa and was assigned to Company B, 20th Iowa Volunteer infantry, in August, 1862. He took part in the Missouri and Arkansas campaign until June, 1863, then went with his company to Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Port Hudson, Louisiana participating in all those grim engagements which had their vital part in overcoming the rebellion. At Vicksburg he was under constant fire of the enemy for thirty-two days--a period of constant roar of conflict, day and night. He was with Banks in Texas and was at Mobile, Alabama, at the close of the war. He saw Admiral Farragut lashed to the mast of the Flagship, Hartford, as the ship passed the batteries of the enemy at Ft. Morgan, Mobile bay, mid a perfect hail of shot and shell. He was mustered out at Mobile, Alabama, July 8, 1865, coming out of the war with the loss of one finger. He became a charter member of Denison Post G.A.R. and was active in the affairs of that soldier organization up to his final illness. Mr. Martin was married to Betsey Wisehart at Marion, Iowa, in 1867. To them were born five daughters and one son, Cora A. Mahuran, of Center Point, Jessie Gramling of Terril, Iowa, Fannie Fern Bolton, who died February 15, 1914, at home, Mary Kester and Fred, at home, and Clara Knight of Center Point. Mrs. Martin passed away December 10, 1914. On April 20, 1868, Mr. and Mrs. Martin moved to their farm two miles east of Center Point, which was then raw prairie, built a slab shanty and commenced farming. They remained on the farm until 1912, when they retired and moved to Center Point, buying a home on summit street. Such a brief epitome of one of the patriotic defenders of his country, a sturdy pioneer who helped carve from the raw state, the great middle west. Mr. Martin was a just man, keen and broad intellectually, keeping fully abreast of the times up to the very last. He was a loved and respected neighbor, a sterling friend, a worthy husband and a wise, kind father. He had been in falling health for a considerable time, but remained up and active until Monday evening of last week, when he was taken ill. He continued to fail rapidly until the end came, quietly and peacefully. There are left, with another strong link to bind them to the bourne of hope and promise, the five children, thirteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a number of nephews and nieces, the little remnant of his army comrades, among whom is his brother, Frank, who served in the same company with him, and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted at the house Sunday afternoon by Rev. F.G. Griewe, and interment was made in the Center Point cemetery beside his wife.
