MARTIN, CIVIL WAR VETERAN, PASSED AWAY Benjamin Franklin Martin was born near Mace, Indiana, December 29, 1937, and died at his home in Center Point December 19, 1926, thus lacking but ten days of being 89 years old, and the last of a family of eleven children. In the fall of 1854, when a boy of 17 years, he came to Center Point, which has been his home town ever since, a period of seventy-two years. He was united in marriage to Miss Amy Andrews of Center Point, January 22, 1861. To this union seven children were born, four of whom, with the wife, preceded Mr. Martin in death, Mrs. Martin's death occurring April 29, 1923. The children remaining are Evi and Essie at home, and Mrs. Pearl Brody of Urbana. There are also four grandchildren. When the nation was plunged into the Civil War, Mr. Martin heeded his country's call for volunteers and leaving his wife and eight-months old daughter, he was mustered into the Union service August 25, 1862, at Clinton, where he and his brother Harrison, were assigned to Company B. Twentieth Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Three other brothers also served in the Union army, but in other regiments. Mr. Martin served his country until the close of the war, almost three years, when he was honorably discharged to return to his home, broken in health, to once more take up the duties of a civilian. Although in several campaigns and sieges against the enemy, most notable of which was the siege of Vicksburg, Mr. Martin was always so modest and unassuming that rarely could he be prevailed upon to relate any of his trials and experiences while in the army. Shortly after the war, he and his wife and daughter started a home on the then virgin prairie about a mile and a half east of Center Point, which place continued to be their home until 1893, when, on account of failing health, he was forced to leave the farm and moved to Center Point, where he had lived since. Mr. Martin was a charter member of Dennison Post No. 244 G.A.R. of which there now remain but five members. Mr. Martin's friend were numbered by the extent of his acquaintances. He was always ready to help any one afflicted or in need and until the last three or four years. He was always ready with his services to anyone and in any way possible. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. W. R. Foster, were held at the Christian church Tuesday at 2 p.m. In addition to preaching a very appropriate funeral discourse. Rev. Foster sang a sole, "In the Garden of Prayer." The remains of this old veteran were interred in the Center Point cemetery beside his wife.
