Description	:	"MONTANA PIONEER" Jacob was the son of Christian Van Gundy 1779-1854 and Catherine Ringenberg 1800-1847, who were both born in Alsace, France and died in Campbell County, Kentucky. They immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1829 with one son, at that time, Joseph. Christian rented a small farm of 25 acres near the city of Cincinnati which he farmed until 1840 when they moved to Campbell County, Kentucky because the farm was too small to support his family which had grown to ten children. Read More	"MONTANA PIONEER" Jacob was the son of Christian Van Gundy 1779-1854 and Catherine Ringenberg 1800-1847, who were both born in Alsace, France and died in Campbell County, Kentucky. They immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1829 with one son, at that time, Joseph. Christian rented a small farm of 25 acres near the city of Cincinnati which he farmed until 1840 when they moved to Campbell County, Kentucky because the farm was too small to support his family which had grown to ten children. Here Christian rented a larger farm. In 1847, when Jacob was 13 years of age, his mother died and Jacob returned to Cincinnati, Ohio to stay with his sister Phoebe Wightman. In 1851, when Jacob was 17 years of age, he began life on his own as a farmhand earning $9 a month. He did this work until age 20. In 1855 he arrived at the Port of San Francisco via Isthmus of Panama. He went directly to the gold diggings in Sierra County, California. After a short time, he was unsuccessful in mining and acquired a clerkship in a store. In 1862 he went to Washoe County, Nevada to try prospecting for silver leads and then to Humboldt County, Nevada where he tried quartz mining. In July 1863 he arrived in Bannock, Montana via Laramie and Soda Springs. Then on to Silver City, Owyhee, Idaho by Oct 1864 where he worked on the Oro Fino mines for $3 a day plus board. In April 1865 Jacob Van Gundy became a "Pioneer of Montana". He, six others and a pack train of horses made the journey along the Snake River while watching for "Indians". They went to Virginia City then to Helena, Blackfoot country. In 1868 Jacob Van Gundy filed the first claim at Coloma, Montana. At Deer Lodge, Montana, Lodge #14 A.F. & A.M. was chartered on 05 Oct 1868 and Jacob E. Van Gundy was listed as a member and Officer. About 1870 Jacob bought Talbott's Saloon at Beartown, Montana for $700 and a stampede emptied the town four days later leaving Jacob in debt for $1500. Jacob was preparing to leave town when his mine paid off and he was able to clear all of his debt with $1,200 left. In 1873 he sold the saloon at Beartown and bought a claim at Phelan Gulch. In the spring of 1874, he went into partnership with Robert Fenner and they established Western Brewery at Deer Lodge. On 02 Dec 1879 Jacob E Van Gundy married Cornelia Catherine Soet. She was born on 13 Jan 1855 at Saint Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri, the daughter of John Soet 1819-1861 and Cornelia Jacobi Van Leeuwen 1826-1892 both born in Holland. Cornelia was previously married and divorced from Horace Henry Lyons 1834-1882. The had two daughters, Cornelia May Van Gundy 1874-1961 and Evelina Montana Van Gundy 1976-1964 married Walter Emery Adams. Cornelia and Jacob had four children together: Elmer Jacob Van Gundy 1880-1918 married Lola Maud Robinson; Catherine Alveretta Van Gundy 1882-1969 married Frederick Mannix; Jay Emory Van Gundy 1883-1965 married Amy Kaminsky and Catherine Elizabeth Timmons; Phoebe May Van Gundy 1891-1986 married Forrest Woodruf Gum and Olin Hendrix Price. Cornelia Soet Van Gundy died on 26 Sept 1942 at Los Angeles, California. In May 1881 Jacob purchased Robert Fenner's interest, made improvements in 1882 and started selling at Butte City and Anaconda. He became a member of Cottonwood Lodge #2 IOOF in June 1883. By 1883 Jacob E. Van Gundy Brewery and Bottling Works was in business, trade and professional circles. In 1886 he sold half of his interests to Ernest Miller and Jacob purchased 15.6 acres in Granite County (008N 013W Section 24). In 1887, at Deer Lodge, he built a brick block 46X80 feet that was two stories. The bottom floor was for businesses and the upper was elegant and occupied by the West Side Club. He also built a residence for his family. In 1892 he leased Miller's interests and began operating alone. Jacob died at his residence at 7: 00 am on Sunday, 31 March 1901. The funeral was at 2:00 pm on Tuesday. His affiliations were: Republican Party Masonic Order Blue Lodge, Past High Priest of Chapter and Commandery I.O.O.F., passed all chairs Grand Lodge, represented some orders Knights of Pythias A.O.U.W., Past Master Workman D. of H. He also helped to organize the Grand Lodge of the A.O.U.W. His siblings: Joseph W.
