Description	:	Jacob Free was born in Duerstein, Germany, on August 31, 1830. He came to Eddyville in 1849 and made his home at Eddyville till death. He was married to Mary Pyatt on March 22, 1859. To their union were born six children, as follows. James F., born December, 1859, and died the same month; W.J. Vance, born September 17, 1869, and resides here; and Clara... Read More	Jacob Free was born in Duerstein, Germany, on August 31, 1830. He came to Eddyville in 1849 and made his home at Eddyville till death. He was married to Mary Pyatt on March 22, 1859. To their union were born six children, as follows. Vance, born September 17, 1869, and resides here; and Clara N., wife of Wm. Myers, born February 10, 1873, and resides here. Mrs. Free was born August 10, 1834, died February 10, 1904. Jacob Free enlisted in the service of his country on August 13, 1862, and served as a dutiful and obedient soldier in the 36th Iowa infantry for three years and was a member in good standing of John Wilcox Post No. 138, Department of Iowa. His comrades will miss him; The last roll call is answered and he rests in peace. For a number of years after coming to Eddyville he followed the occupation of farmer, later engaging in business here. For several years he conducted a lunch counter in a small building where the McMains hardware store is now located. He kept a glowing fire and many of his old army comrades went to gather there and pass their idle time. A number of years ago he retired from business, and for several years he had been in poor health. He died of chronic bronchitis and asthma at 4:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, September 17, 1907. Rev. CW Hempstead, the Congregational pastor, conducted the services at the residence last Thursday, and burial was made in Highland Cemetery, the GAR Post using the regular ritualistic service. The pallbearers were: F.M. Epperson, B.F. Gordon, H.G. True, J.J. Roberts, P.H. Stuber, and W.T. Meeker. During the period of almost 60 years in which he resided here Jacob free had won the confidence and friendship of his fellow townsmen and a multitude of friends regret the demise of this venerable citizen.
