Description	:	Jacob J. Appley, a pioneer resident of Union county, S.D., passed away at his home, six miles southwest of Akron, on Thursday, February 3, 1921, after only, a few minutes illness. J.J. Appley was born in Switzerland, February 7, 1838. At the age of eighteen years he left his fatherland and went, to Norway, where he lived for eleven years. Appley, a pioneer resident of Union county, S.D., passed away at his home, six miles southwest of Akron, on Thursday, February 3, 1921, after only, a few minutes illness. J.J. Appley was born in Switzerland, February 7, 1838. At the age of eighteen years he left his fatherland and went, to Norway, where he lived for eleven years. In the spring of 1868 he left for the United States of America and came to Union county, S.D., the same year. Just before leaving for America he was married to Miss Anna Martha Olsdatter. They located in 1868 on the homestead about six miles west of Akron, which has since remained the family home. Mr. Appley was an intelligent man, a hard-working man, and a good citizen. He came to a new country with his young bride in 1868, and thus they experienced the privations, inconveniences and often sufferings of pioneer life. His wife preceded him in death by nine years, after a long and painful illness. He built a beautiful home and raised a fine family. His children were good and kind to him. His daughter, Mrs. Oscar Oakes, cared for him during his last declining years, and it was a tender and faithful care he received. He leaves to mourn the loss of a good and kind father, five children: Mrs. Oscar Oakes, Mrs. A.M. Hall, Mrs. L. Anfinson, Mrs. G.T. Olson and Jos. M. Appley, who were all present at the funeral. There are also eight grandchildren. Our sympathy goes out to the bereaved family. Mr. Appley was always a member of the St. Paul Lutheran church, where the funeral was conducted by Rev. A.J. Bergsaker on Sunday, February 6, at 3:00 p.m., following a brief service at the home at 1:30 o'clock. In spite of unfavorable weather and roads, the services were largely attended.
