Description	:	Third Corporal Jacob S. Gantz was 26, and living in Jefferson Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. M of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Nov. 25, 1861. He became a "Reenlisted Veteran" on Dec. 11, 1863. Gantz was promoted to 5th Corporal on May 1, 1864, and to 3rd Corporal on Jan. 1, 1865. He was mustered out on Company rolls Aug. 8, 1865, as "absent in hospital, wounded." His discharge was given at Keokuk Aug. 21, 1865. In his diary, Gantz noted: "last night about 9 oc we stoped at a house at plantersville where we wounded stayed all night. we see a prety hard time. this morning the doc told me that my arm would have to come off & at 7 oc they amputated my arm which was hard for me but such are the trials of war." After the war, his diary was published as "Such Are the Trials: The Civil War Diaries of Jacob Gantz." After the war, Gantz was elected sheriff of Jefferson County, Iowa, and served for 6 years until 1872. In 1872, he opened a boarding house in Fairfield called the Gantz House with a livery stable next door. In addition, he later served one term as the tax assessor for Fairfield, and owned a 160-acre farm north of Fairfield. Born into a Baptist home, during the war Gantz became a Methodist, and was active in his church. He was a dedicated member of the Odd Fellows, and also of the local GAR chapter of which he was commander in 1890. He had been a delegate to the national GAR encampment in 1885, and attended the GAR encampments every year until 1920. When Gantz died, the Fairfield Ledger-Journal carried his obit on the front page. The flag at the county courthouse flew at half-mast on the day of his funeral, and the paper noted "it has become a beautiful custom to fly the flag at half mast here when one of its defenders goes."
