Andreas, Chicago, IL.) Brown county, Kansas: JACOB SCOUTEN, farmer and stock raiser, Section 20, P. O. Hiawatha, was born in Genesee County, N. Y., January 15, 1822. He was afterwards a resident of Pike County, Ill., where he followed farming. In June, 1857, he came to Kansas, and pre-empted 160 acres of land on Section 9, Hiawatha Township, where he lived until 1865, and then removed to his present place of residence. Here he also has 160 acres of fine improved land and a choice fruit orchard of all kinds. His farm is supplied with good comfortable buildings, and surrounded by a lovely hedge fence, which gives the farms in this part of the country such a beautiful appearance. In 1865 Mr. Scouten was enrolled with the State Militia in the suppression of the Price raid, so famous in the Rebellion. He was married in Illinois, 1851, to Miss Mary Gray, formerly from Ohio, where she was born. Their family consists of six children Della, married to G. W. Peterson, of Palmyra, Neb.; Willis F., Ella, now Mrs. Jesse A. Worley, Hiawatha; Albert H., Josephine and Harriet E. ********** Obituary: Jacob Scouten, one of the first settlers in Brown County, died Tuesday at his home in Fairview. Mr. Scouten lived for a great many years on a farm north of Hiawatha and his body was brought here Wednesday afternoon and buried in the Hiawatha Cemetery. His wife and his two sons, Frank and Willis Scouten, at Fairview. The Brown County World (Hiawatha, Kansas) May 1, 1903 Friday ****** Jacob Scouten was buried in the old Hiawatha Cemetery on Wednesday, April 29. For the past 12 years he has lived in Fairview, where his death occured. Mr. Scouten was one of the pioneers of Brown County and for many years lived on his farm one-half mile north of Hiawatha. "The evil that men do lives after them, the good is often interred with their bones." There was no evil in the old man's nature and many deeds of kindness will be forgotten by most of the recipients. He had numerous children. His house was a social center in the days between 1860 and 1880. What we would refer to most particularly was his never failing generosity to neighbors and friends. In the old days when emigration was made on wheels and horseback, his house was a general stopping place and neither man nor beast was ever turned away hungry--the money consideration cutting no figure. We have no data concerning his birthplace, but know that he came here from Illinois with a small crowd that settled around Pilot Grove, where Elijah and Oscar Boyce now live, three miles north of Hiawatha. The good and generous old soul has gone hence, leaving the world better for his tarrying here. If all his good acts could be built into a monument it would be sky high.
