Description	:	JAMES A. HAWKINS James was born at Sinks Grove, Monroe County, West Virginia, March 6, 1866. He attended public school at that place until 14 years of age, at which time he entered the Second Creek high school of Greenbrier County, W. Va., and attended the same for two and one-half sessions to Jan. 1, 1883. He then entered Dunsmore's Business College of Staunton, Va., completing the course in five months and receiving his diploma declaring him master of accounts. HAWKINS James was born at Sinks Grove, Monroe County, West Virginia, March 6, 1866. He attended public school at that place until 14 years of age, at which time he entered the Second Creek high school of Greenbrier County, W. Va., and attended the same for two and one-half sessions to Jan. 1, 1883. He then entered Dunsmore's Business College of Staunton, Va., completing the course in five months and receiving his diploma declaring him master of accounts. Afterward, he secured a position, first with J. M. Johnson of Monroe County, and remained with him until he sold out, when he sold goods for the new firm until 1888, at which time he decided to come West. This he did, securing a position with J. R. Ervin at DuBois in 1889, remaining there until the time of Mr. Ervin's death in 1894, with the exception of one year spent at his birthplace. After his employer's death he was engaged by Hon. John M. Osborn, executor, to manage the store for a season and assist in settling the estate. On Feb. 1, 1896, he and his brother Jeff Hawkins bought the stock of goods belonging to the Ervin estate, and have continued in business at this pl;ace ever since. Mr. Hawkins has been honored by the unanimous nomination for county clerk this fall. He is a young man of splendid business qualifications and has many strong personal friends throughout the county. HAWKINS James Archibald son of Archibald MacDowell and Isabella Miller Hawkins, was born at Sinks Grove, Monroe County, W. Va. March 4, 1866 and died at home in DuBois, Neb. July 28, 1948, aged 82 years, 4 months and 22 days. As a boy "Jim" attended school at Sinks Grove, and was one of a very few of his generation to obtain a high school education. After being graduated from Second Creek high school., he attended Dunamore Business College at Staunton, Va. In 1888 he came to Pawnee county, Neb. where other members of his family had located earlier. He stayed for a short time then returned to West Virginia but came back in 1892. He worked at Burchard and Pawnee City where he was employed by J. b. Irwin for a number of years. About 50 years ago he established a business in DuBois with George Potts, and for most of the remainder of his life, he was in business in DuBois either alone or in partnership. Fifty-one years ago July 25, 1897, he united with the Methodist church and served it not only as a faithful member, but in a number of official positions. He was the last treasurer, and a member of the union of Evangelical and United Brethren churches, and only the day before his death had been selected as one of a group of three to complete the details of the property transfer. Mr. Hawkins was married August 23, 1899, to Miss Martha Brannan, at Winfield, Kan. Two children Bertram and Altha, came to bless the home before the death of the wife and mother in 1906. With the help of his sister, Jennie Beamer and grandmother Fullerton, he kept a home for the children for a number of years, and after they were grown and gone from the home, he made his home with his sister, Mrs. Emma Boyd, until the time of his death. Left to cherish the memories of his long and fruitful life are the son, Bertram of Lincoln, and the daughter, Mrs. Dorrance Pyle, Thermopolis, Wy., two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Beamer and Mrs. Emma Boyd, both of DuBois; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and other relatives; and a host of friends. Someone suggested, when told of Mr. Hawkins passing, that there was probably no one in DuBois, who could tell all that his life had meant to the community. Certainly he is numbered among those who loved his fellowmen, and served them in every possible way, often at great sacrifice, and always without any thought of self. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00, Rev. Paul L. Dick conducting. Interment was in the DuBois Cemetery.
