Another daughter, Mrs. Lindhe, of Glacier Park, died recently. James Currie Auld was born on his father's farm in Canada March 8, 1851 (sic). He was educated in public schools of Canada and he early learned to work on the farm, breaking oxen, chopping cordwood and doing other tasks. When 24, he began farming for himself, which he continued until 1881, when he went to Saskatchewan and took up homestead and pre-emption claims. This was during the Riel rebellion and until 1885 he served in the transport service of the Canadian government. In 1887 Mr. Auld came to Montana and worked for the N-N Cattle company as a cowboy. In the fall he returned to Regina, Sask. Returning with his family, teams and cows, he located in old Chouteau county at Hinsdale. Soon afterwards they moved to where Toledo, Hill county, is now located and lived in a section house for five years, Mr. Auld being a section foreman for the Great Northern railway. He was the oldest employee between Minot, N. D. and Great Falls and ran the first section car in to Havre. Mr. Auld resigned the section foremanship to take squatters rights on a tract of Indian reservation land, this being immediately after the reservation was opened for settlement. In the spring of 1889, he started in the cattle business with two cows he brought from Canada. He bought a carload of cattle and increased his herd until he had 300 to 400 head. His favorite type was white-face, and he was successful in raising Percheron horses. In the spring of 1919 he sold a team weighing 3,400 pounds. In 1914, just prior to the outbreak of war, he imported from France a fine Percheron stallion. Feb. 24, 1876, Mr. Auld married Mary Ross, who was born at Zora, Canada. Seven children were born, William James, who married Ada Lawrence; John, who married Ethel Sprague; Margaret H., widow of Thomas W. McKenzie, former Havre postmaster; Marion, deceased, who married John F. Lindhe, a merchant at Glacier Park; Lillian, wife of Harry B. Atkinson, railroad conductor; and Hazel, deceased, who married Clarence Reasman. Mr. Auld was a democrat and served for many years on the school board. He was one of Havre's first aldermen. In the fall of 1891 he built the first livery stable at Havre, which occupied ground where the Buttrey store now is located. In 1904 he sold out the livery business, giving his entire time to his cattle. In 1892 he built what today is the oldest residence at Havre, at Third street and Third avenue. Mr. Auld was a road supervisor for old Chouteau county for many years and from 1923 on he was a county commissioner for several terms. He was a member of the Elks. Contributor: cara
