HILDEBRAND FATALLY INJURED Thrown from Hay Rack and Suffered Fractured Skull, Passed Away Tuesday Night. James G. P. Hildebrand, 70, died Tuesday night at the Pawnee Hospital as the result of a fractured skull received in an accident. Mr. Hildebrand was working in the hay field at the Emil Shinn home near DuBois Saturday. He was on the load of hay when the team started to run, circling the field. Some of the hay slipped off the load carrying him with it and he struck the ground head-first, suffering the fracture. The ambulance was summoned from Pawnee City and he was brought to the hospital. From the first his condition was considered hopeless and he never regained consciousness. In the tragic death of James Hildebrand, Pawnee county loses one of its best citizens. A member of a Pawnee county family, he was born and lived practically all his life on a farm near DuBois. The last few years the family lived in town. Jim was an example of our highest type of citizen. He was a good farmer, a hard worker, honest, and enjoyed the confidence and respect of everyone. H was a member of the K. P. Lodge at DuBois, and for some time had been holding the position of street commissioner in that town. His wife was the former Miss Lucia Moore, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Moore, who were early day settlers and who lived south of Pawnee City. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church in DuBois, Friday afternoon of this week at two o'clock. HILDEBRAND James eldest son of Julius and Mary Hildebrand was born October 20, 1872 at Ottumwa, Iowa and passed away at the Pawnee hospital August 4, 1942 at the age of 69 years, 9 months and 15 days. His first illness occurred October 17, 1941 when he suffered a paralytic stroke. Since that time his health has been failing but because he loved to work he refused to remain idle and it was while at work he met with the accident which resulted in his death. As a boy he came to Nebraska and formerly lived at the old Blecka farm about two miles north of town, where he grew to manhood. He attended the rural school at Union, and also completed the highest grade offered by the DuBois school at that time. On February 24, 1897 he was united in marriage to Lucia Moore at Pawnee City. They located on a farm southeast of this same city and began a happy home where they lived until 1906 when they moved to a farm north of DuBois where the family spent may happy years together. In 1935 he moved with his family to the village of DuBois where he continued to make his home until death called. To this union nine children were born, all being at his bedside at the end, namely Arthur, Isabelle, Joey, Alice, Harry, Pauline, James, Bernice and Kenneth and the family circle remained unbroken until the summons came to the father and husband. Mr. Hildebrand was active in civic affairs and enjoyed doing service for others. He held membership in the Community club, served for more than 20 years on the school board and was street commissioner for a number of years, vigorous, staunch and industrious in all he undertook. He was initiated on March 27, 1914 and charged and admitted on April 1, 1914 into the K of P. lodge of DuBois where for more than 28 years he was one of the most loyal members with the interest of the lodge always at heart, willing to do more than his part among the first at each meeting, and one of the last to leave. He loved the work and devoted a good deal of his time to fostering its ideals. For two years he was an officer in the Grand Lodge of the Knights of Pythias of the state of Nebraska. The large representation of his lodge attest to the fact of his many loyal years. He was also a former member of the Woodmen of America. Early i life he was baptized and attended church and Sunday school of which he often spoke to the writer. James or Jim as everybody called him was a lover of his home and family and always willing to help others, a good provider and was admired by all who knew him as a friend and neighbor. He was delighted in his children and interested in all they did. He gave largely of his time to make their enjoyment complete taking them to box suppers, basketball games, band concerts, on sleigh rides, in fact he enjoyed it as much as they and was glad to do this for the children of his community. He was a great lover of trees too and enjoyed picturing for each the views of road and town in the days that have rapidly slipped away. He was honest, a hard worker, a respected citizen of his community, one of our native sons we might say, who enjoyed the country and loved his surroundings. "I might add that I, Rev. Webb, have personally enjoyed his association, partaken of his hospitality, worked by his side and found him willing, cheerful and courteous and noble. I have cherished his friendship and enjoyed the fellowship of him and his family." He is survived by his beloved wife, and all his children which at this age is an unusual thing. They are Arthur of Pawnee City, Mrs. Isabelle Kaan, Lusk, Wyo., Mrs. Joy Novatny of Narka, Kas., Mrs. Alice Alton of Lincoln, Neb., Harry of Omaha, Neb., Mrs. Pauline Reist of Bern, James of Salinas, Calif., Mrs. Berniece Kustner at home and Kenneth of the U. S. Navy; one brother, A. E. Hildebrand, of Chicago, Ill, and one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Spohr of DuBois. One brother and one sister preceded him in death, also surviving are several aunts in Pennsylvania, 12 grandchildren in whom he took much pride, two others having answered the call of death, a number of other relatives and a host of friends. And so another early settler 's son has gone to answer the roll that awaits all of us. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in DuBois Friday, August 7, at 2 o'clock with Rev. Otis Webb officiating. A quartet sang. Pallbearers were lodge brothers, Paul Andrews, John Bohm, Nathan Allison, Leo Haight, Harold Mosteller and Max Church. Interment was in Pawnee City cemetery.
