Hildebrand Shuss was born in Keokuk county, Iowa, June 14, 1876, and departed this life to be with Jesus April 27, at the age of 61 years, 10 months and 13 days. Services were held at the Table Rock Christian church and burial at the DuBois cemetery Friday, conducted by Rev. Otis Webb, pastor of the United Brethren church of DuBois. Mrs. Shuss came to Nebraska with the family in 1879. She was a DuBois resident her entire life except the first ten years of her married life when she lived in Idaho. She attended the DuBois high school, the Pawnee City academy and the Peru Teachers college. For a number of years she taught school. Mrs. Shuss became a Christian at an early age in the Brethren church of Sabetha, Kansas, and was a faithful, loving Christian, a devoted wife and mother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. On December 25, 1906, she was married to John F. Shuss who with the sons Junius and Harold are left to mourn her. Other survivors are two brothers, J. G. P. Hildebrand of DuBois, and A. E. Hildebrand of Chicago; a sister, Mrs. J. S. Spohr of DuBois and a host of relatives and sorrowing friends. "Servant of God, well done, they glorious warfare past, the battle's fought, the race is won, and thou art crowned at last. She is not dead, she has but passed beyond the mists that bind us here. Into the new and larger life of that serener sphere. She has but dropped her robe of clay to put her shining raiment on; she has not wandered far away; she is not lost or gone, but just away to spend her days with Christ her Lord." Mother dear, how much we loved you, Tongue nor time can never tell; But though we've lost your cheery presence, Our hearts still say that all is well. Though they now with grief are broken, Yet they still may thrill with song. Happy indeed our lot has been, That you have been with us so long. And down the years your deathless spirit, Though we know both wind and tide, Strong and true and brave and tender, With us ever shall abide. We can never know the meaning, Of your life so good and true; Yet our lives are rich unbounded, Through the debt we owe to you. (Posted courtesy of the Table Rock Historical Society.)
