Description	:	James Garfield "Jim" Grant was born April 5, 1891 in the Silvermine community, Nantahala township of Swain County, NC. He was the son of John Patton Grant and second wife, Georgia Ann "Georgeann" Wofford Grant He appears on the Federal Census in 1900 and 1910 in his parents' household with his siblings and half siblings. He was the son of John Patton Grant and second wife, Georgia Ann "Georgeann" Wofford Grant He appears on the Federal Census in 1900 and 1910 in his parents' household with his siblings and half siblings. Grant, 19, of Swain County, to Mary Holbrook, age 18, of Swain County; on May 8, 1910 at "Silver Creek Church House" [Silvermine] in Nantahala Township of Swain County, NC by James M Lee, Baptist Minister; Witnesses J.W. Styles, W.L Lindsay, J.R. Holden. Three children were born to this union, in Nantahala, Swain County, NC: Oscar Lyle Grant - born January 26, 1910 Emmitt Harold Grant November 16, 1913 Wilma Grant born October 26, 1916 [NOTE: Howard D Grant in California was NOT his son. That a Howard was the son of Frank Grant and May Helen Donovon Grant; his mother May was born in NJ, d in San Francisco and was the niece of JDaniel O'Connor who has their memorial etched on the side of his stone; unfortunately someone tied her to this family—but she is NOT Mary Holbrook Grant] Mary Holbrook died about 1917 and was buried at the Grant Family Cemetery. Notice on Jim's WWI Registration Card, it says he is "Married" and has "three children" —(thanks Giny Speaks Gallandt FIND A GRAVE ID 48643783 for confirming the identity of the 3rd child). This was before he married his second wife so it confirms that Mary Holbrook Grant died after that registration which was June 5, 1917. For sure she died before Dec. 24, 1918 as that is when Jim remarried. Other information from the WWI Draft Registration card, June 5, 1917: Age 26; Physcial description:Physical Build: Medium Height: Medium Hair Color: Black, bald; Eye Color: Blue/ Married, 3 dependent children. Work: farmer, works for father; Registrant: Hewitts in Swain County, NC Jim and his 2 sons (Oscar and Emmitt) moved in with his parents after Mary died; John Patton Grant and Georgeann raised his two sons.. Mary's body rests in the Grant Family Cemetery. (See the note on Mary's memorial). Jim's second marriage was in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC.on December 24, 1918 2. Tiny Osborne (age 22, born about 1896, daughter of Jno W Osborne and Minnie Osborne-the father deceased, mother living in Swain Co., NC) to James Grant (age 26, son of Jno P Grant and Georgia Grant-both living, of Swain Co., NC). Other details from the record: both of Swain County, NC.; by CC Myers, Presbyterian Minister, Witnesses: Mrs J.S. Deaton, EB. McCall, Mrs. E.B. McCall, all of NC. The 1920 Census shows Jim in the household with his parents, siblings, and 2 sons. I can't find a death record for Tiny Obsborne Grant but as Jim is a widower on the 1920 Census, she died before that Census. Jim's 3rd marriage was to Tiny's sister, Carolyn (or Caroline is how it is spelled on records). Tiny and Caroline are not the same person. They each have different birth years and different marriage records. 3. Jim's third marriage was to Carolyn Osborne, on September 19, 1920 Nantahala township, Swain County, North Carolina, USA: J.G. Grant, age 28, of Swain County, to Caroline Osborn, age 21 of Swain County; by J.H. Grant, Missionary Baptist, of Swain Co., in Nantahala Township. Witnesses were W R Gregory, Carl Gregory, and A.M Laney. The 1930 Census lists them in Nantahala township, Swain County, NC: James G Grant 39 Head, farmer/truck farm Carolina Grant 30 Wife Jack Johnson 7 Nephew In 1940, the Couple are still living in Nantahala township of Swain County. Jim is employed as a foreman with the W.P.A.: James Grant 49 Head Caroline Grant 41 Wife Jack Johnson 18 Nephew They had no children of their own but took in Jack Johnson. Family said they raised two boys. Jim Johnson is listed on the 1940 census. Another name was Arnold Grant (who is listed on the 1950 Census): 1950 Nantahala Township, Swain County, North Carolina, USA (this was on Big Creek off Silvermine Creek): James Grant 59 unable to work Carolyn Grant 50 wife, keeping house Arnold Grant 10 son Arnold was not a biological son of Jim and Caroline, he was adopted and while in their household he went by the surname Grant; as an adult though, he used his legal surname, Arnold Richard Owenby. His mother was Frances Maude Owenby, the daughter of (1923-1973), from Nantahala, Macon County, NC; she was the daughter of William Alexander Owenby and Bertha Ruth May. It is not known who Arnold Owenby's father was. I talked to relatives who rode the school bus with Arnold and it would stop at Big Creek; they said there was an Owenby family up the road from Jim and Caroline on Big Creek. the next house up. The 1950 Census does show the next house is vacant; the next is Ed J and Rosie Owenby {this is Edward Jay Owenby and Rosa Mae Burnette} and and the next is Jay and Hollie Owenby [This is the son of Ed J and Rosie, Jay Samuel Owenby and Hallie Azalee Mashburn]. More research is needed to know if those are related to Arnold's mother. On Arnold's obituary (2021) it lists his parents and Jim and Caroline Grant; they were his adoptive parents; they took in two boys and raised them. If anyone has more information he/she would like to share or see any errors, please let me know. Jim passed away on July, 31 1964; the residence was given as Almond, Swain County, North Carolina, USA.
