Scarff Another aged veteran of the Civil War, honored by his countrymen, and beloved by his friends and neighbors, James H. Scarff, passed to his reward at his home in Rome, Iowa, January 13, 1925, after many years of sickness and suffering. Fifteen years ago he was visited by a stroke of paralyals from which he never recovered. With unusual patience, cared for by his wife and children most lovingly, he bore with quiet resignation the affliction which rested so heavily upon him. He was an earnest Christian man converted in young manhood and gave many evidences all thru his life of faith in Jesus Christ and of what faith does in a human soul. James H. Scarff was a son of John and Laura (Osler) Scarff, and was born in Clark county, Ohio, August 4, 1840. He was 84 years, five months and nine days of age. His parents were natives of Maryland. They removed to Iowa and to Henry county in 1844. Here he grew to manhood. When the great rebellion broke out he enlisted in the 25th Iowa Infantry on August 27, 1862. He served until the close of the war. He participated in the battles of Arkansas Post, Vicksburg, Jackson, Mississippi, Resaca and Masetta, and was with Sherman in his famous march "from Atlanta to the sea." He received a wound at the Battle of Peach Tree Creek. He took part in the grand review in Washington, D.C. and was mustered out at Davenport, Iowa, June 25, 1865. His service to his country was free, full, faithful and honorable. May 6, 1866, he and Mary A. Messer were united in marriage. Thirteen children were born to bless their home. Five of them, James, Edmund, Asbury, Calvin and Anne, have passed away. Those remaining with their mother are Charles Henry, Meadville, Mo.; John A. of near Trenton, Ia.; Mrs. Chris Ensminger and Mrs. Geo. Ensminger, Troy, Ia.; Mrs. Frank D. Swailes, near Rome, Ia.; Mrs. Amos Dunegan, West Burlington, Ia.; Mrs. Cliff Miller, Fairfield, Ia.; and Mrs. Ed Beaber who lived at home to help care for her father during his long illness. Besides these, a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren are left. Hundreds of old friends and neighbors, too, regret the passing of the veteran. Funeral services conducted by Frank E. Weston, pastor of the First Baptist church, Mt. Pleasant, were held in the church at White Oak on Thursday forenoon at eleven o'clock. They were largely attended. Members of the Woman's Relief Corps, McFarland Post, G.A.R. were present and draped the the casket with the country's flag. Many beautiful floral tributes were sent. Pastor Weston spoke from Job 5:25. Mrs. Clifton Logan, Mrs. Bert Jay and pastor Weston, with Mrs. J. W. Jackson as accompanist, sang at the house, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," and at the church, "Asleep in Jesus," "rock of Ages," "The Home Over There," and "Going Down the Valleyy." The pallbearers, all grandchildren, were Ellsworth, Merl and Ora Scarff, Everett and Clyde Ensminger and Roy Swailes. Interment was in the family plot in White Oak cemetery. So passes another landmark of early Iowa, a good, clean, living, Christian man, one of the kind of men that have made Iowa what she is, a sisterhood of states. {Mount Pleasant Daily News --- Monday, 19 January 1925}
