Bartley, a native of Fort Benton and a resident here for more than 30 years, passed away in a Great Falls hospital Thursday morning. He had been a patient there for the past nine days. James M. Bartley was born in Fort Benton on Jan. 5, 1892, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Bartley, pioneer Fort Benton residents. He attended the local schools here in both grades and high school and the business college in Sedalia, Missouri. He was bookkeeper for T. C. Power & Bro, Ltd., enterprises in Fort Benton from 1909 until 1914, when he moved to Great Falls. He was associated with the Lindsay Fruit Co. in 1914 and 1915. Mr. Bartley returned to this city in 1915 and became associated with the old Stockman's National Bank where he rose to be assistant cashier. He served in that capacity until the bank was closed. He then moved to Great Falls and was associated with the Devine and Asselstine distributing firm. He became a director and treasurer of that organization in 1927. Dec. 31, 1950, the corporation's charter was changed and the firm became known as Devine, Asselstine and Bartley. In 1954 he sold out his interest and organized the Bartley Distributing Co. with his nephew, James A. Bartley. He retired in 1959. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and Knights of Columbus. Surviving are two nephews, Leo and James A. Bartley of Great Falls; two brothers, Charles E. Bartley of Great Falls and John A. Bartley of New York City; an aunt, Margaret Egan and a niece, Mary Helen Bartley, both of Great Falls, and three nieces in New York City. Mr. Bartley made many friends during his long residence in this city and in Great Falls and was held in the highest esteem by all. He was always very accommodating in all of his business dealings. Requiem Mass was held at St. Ann's Cathedral in Great Falls at 9:15 a.m. The remains were brought to Fort Benton and burial was made in the family plot in Riverside cemetery. The relatives have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
