About 12 o'clock Sunday night Monroe Fishback, operator at Saffordville, was at his key taking a train order, when he heard the command, "Throw up your hands." He involuntarily started and turned his head to see who was there. At the window was a man masked with a handkerchief over his face and with a revolver aimed at his head. Before Fishback could speak the stranger fired and the bullet went through his neck and into his shoulder. The man immediately turned and and took to his heels. Fishback managed to walk to his boarding house, near by, and make a noise on the door. When the people of the house came to the door they found him fainting on the steps. The day operator hurried to the station and sent a message to this station telling of the assault, and an engine and caboose with a posse of men went at once to Saffordville. Mr. Fishback's injuries were found to be very serious. The bullet had severed his windpipe and gone through into the shoulder. He was brought at once to Emporia and taken to the home of his brother-in-law J.H. Witte, where the bullet was taken out and every attention given the wounded man. A search was made all over the country about Saffordville, but no trace was found of the would-be murderer. Mr. Fishback was not able to give a description of the man and it will be very difficult to find him. The general supposition is that the stranger was one of the tramps from Colorado, who was attempting to rob the station, but became so frightened by the results of his shot that the fled without carrying out his purpose. Mr. Fishback is an Emporia boy. He was a printer in this city, but learned telegraphy and was until recently operator at the Junction. He is a cousin of County Clerk Wilhite and has many relatives here. ************************************ Emporia Gazette, Wednesday, January 31, 1923; p. 8, c. 5 Funeral of Monroe Fishback Funeral services for Monroe Fishback, formerly a resident of Emporia, who died near Pueblo several days ago, were held at noon in Maplewood cemetery. The Masons conducted the services, assisted by P.R. Kellar, reader of the Christian Science church. The pallbearers were S.N. Parker, Tom Owen, Lon King, Owen Galey, C.S. Moore and D.T. Miller. ************************************ Emporia Weekly Gazette, Thursday, February 1, 1923 Monroe Fishback Dead. Monroe Fishback, a former resident of Emporia, died near Pueblo several days ago, according to word received by Emporia relatives. The telegram did not state the cause of Mr. Fishback's death. Mr. Fishback was the brother of Mrs. John Gregory and Mrs. Eli Fowler of Emporia.
