Read More	ENTERED INTO REST Mrs. Mary E. Fishback departed this life Sunday evening at the residence of her son-in-law, John Gregory in the Fowler settlement, age 53. The cause of death was heart disease. The deceased came to Emporia from Morgan county, Indiana in 1857. She was an active member of the Christian church, and closely identified with the growth and development of that denomination in his community. She was a Christian in the broadest sense of that word, and her life was devoted to the rearing of a family which she brought up in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Mrs. Fishback was twice married, her first husband being the father of C.T. Cavaness, of this city. She leaves to cherish her memory six children, Mr. Cavaness, Mrs. Eli Fowler, Mrs. John Gregory, Mrs. I.T. Way, two unmarried daughters, Tillie and Stella, and a younger son. Mrs. Fishback at the time of her death was engaged in the erection of a dwelling on Exchange street which she expected to occupy in the near future. But while she was concerned for the things of this life, she had made diligent preparation for that which is to come, and the summons which must one day come to us all, found her ready to enter upon the inheritance which she confidently believed awaited her beyond the grave. The funeral took place Monday at Fowler's chapel and was very largely attended. Elder Lotz conducted the services. Nearly a year ago the subject of this obituary, Mrs. Mary E. Fishback showed evidence of declining health, but not until recently were any apprehensions felt as to her recovery, her friends believing that the strong constitution she had ever rejoiced in, must eventually triumph, almost imperceptibly rheumatic and kindred heart affections gained such ascendancy over those strange mysterious forces, the aggregate of whose phenomena we call life, that on Saturday last it was plainly apparent the end was near. On the following afternoon, at the residence of her son-in-law, John Gregory, three miles southeast of the city, conscious to the end, triumphant in the faith, and calm as the glorious Sabbath above her, Mrs. Marry E. Fishback breathed her last. Mrs. Fishback was born in Kentucky in September, 1830, and was taken by her parents to Indiana about two years afterward. There she married James Cavaness in 1847. In the summer of 1849, Mr. Cavaness, her first husband died, leaving as the fruit of their union a son, Charles T., and a daughter, Zerilda, the latter now being Mrs. Eli Fowler. In 1852, the then Mrs. Cavaness was again married, this time to Granville Fishback, of Morgan county, Indiana, After marriage they resided in that state until 1857, when they came to Kansas, residing in and around Emporia, except during a short return, until 1874, when Mr. Fishback died at their home, a sort distance south of Fowler chapel. Not long afterwards Mrs. Fishback traded for property east of the city which she sold a short time ago, and afterwards bought on upper Exchange street where, at the time of her death, she was putting up a dwelling whose location offered her better church and social privileges, both pf which she highly esteemed. But to this earthly tabernacle failed, and her marvelous faith in a future world now has a realization in everlasting habitations, house not made with hands. The deceased was a little over fifty-three years old, and had been a devoted member of the Christian church for nearly forty years, and the universal esteem in which she was held attests the sincerity and consistency of her profession. Surviving her are four brothers, Thos. Wilhite of Hall, Ind., and James W., John E. and Albert G. Wilhite of this county. Mrs. Thos. Mitchell of Chanute is the only sister living. Besides the two children by her first marriage already mentioned, Ellen (Mrs. Gregory), Livonia (Mrs. I.T. Way), Stella and Monnie [James Monroe]survive her. Her other daughters preceded her to the spirit land, Lorinda passing away in February, 1880, and Tillie in November, 1881. The funeral was attended to at Fowler chapel Monday afternoon. Elder Lotz officiating, after which the remains were interred for the present in the family cemetery near the chapel.
