Description	:	James P. Schmidt, Sr., Kansas City, MO, passed away December 23, 2008. He will be greatly missed by his 5 children and 8 grandchildren. Jim was born on December 4, 1923 in Catharine, KS, the ninth of thirteen children of Clara Anna Karlin and Jacob John Schmidt. He graduated from St. Joseph's Military Academy in Hays, KS in 1943, and served with the U.S. Infantry, from 1943-1947 at U.S. Training Centers, the South Pacific Islands and the Philippine Islands, retiring with the rank of Captain. He will be greatly missed by his 5 children and 8 grandchildren. Jim was born on December 4, 1923 in Catharine, KS, the ninth of thirteen children of Clara Anna Karlin and Jacob John Schmidt. He graduated from St. Joseph's Military Academy in Hays, KS in 1943, and served with the U.S. Infantry, from 1943-1947 at U.S. Training Centers, the South Pacific Islands and the Philippine Islands, retiring with the rank of Captain. He studied at Fort Hays College and Central Radio Institute in Kansas City, specializing in television engineering. He was instrumental in the construction and operation of the first TV station in Houston, (KLEE-TV) and the first TV station in Kansas City (WDAF-TV). He served as chief engineer of WDAF television and the radio station from 1956- 1983. He was a 40-year member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. Together with his wife, Margaret Ann, who preceded him in death in 1995, he was a founding member of St. Therese Church in Parkville, MO. He is survived by his children, Ann Schmidt Mertes (David) of Des Moines, IA, Pat Schmidt, John Schmidt (Andrea), Michael Schmidt (Diane) and David Schmidt (Amy) all of the Kansas City area, and his grandchildren, Nicholas and Daniel James Mertes, Jacob & Emily, Robbie, Jonathan, Molly and Ella Margaret Schmidt. He is also survived by his brother Tony (Nettie) Schmidt of Richardson, TX, and sisters, Johanna Walters of Salina, KS, Delores (Don) Dreiling of Overland Park, KS, and Roseann (Bud) Malsam of WaKeeney, KS, and many nieces and nephews throughout the country. He will be greatly missed. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 26th from 4-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 at St. Therese Catholic Church, 7207 NW Hwy 9, Kansas City, MO. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 27th at the church. Burial at East Slope Cemetery, Riverside, MO.
