Description	:	James Uriah Baker was born March 24, 1852 in Dade County, Georgia and departed this life in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Hawes, Clay Center, KS on January 27, 1935. Mr. Baker came to Kansas in the spring of 1868 and settled on a farm with his parents, William Walter Baker and Martha Ann Sammons Baker, and four of his siblings, near Clay Center. Read More	James Uriah Baker was born March 24, 1852 in Dade County, Georgia and departed this life in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Hawes, Clay Center, KS on January 27, 1935. Mr. Baker came to Kansas in the spring of 1868 and settled on a farm with his parents, William Walter Baker and Martha Ann Sammons Baker, and four of his siblings, near Clay Center. On June 18, 1874 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Josephine Pinkerton. Together Mr. and Mrs. Baker shared their joys, divided their sorrows, and carried their burdens devoted and loyal to each other; industrious, honest and upright in all their dealings, believing that honesty is the only policy; and industry and frugality bring liberty and prosperity. A wonderful back ground for their children of whom nine came to gladden their hearts and bless their lives, five sons and four daughters. One son and one daughter passed away in infancy. The remaining left to mourn their loss are Hattie Elizabeth (Mrs. M. P.) Van Scoyoc of Oak Hill, KS; Lewis Oscar Baker and James Arthur Baker of Harlingen, TX; Dovie Aural (Mrs. Walter) Hawes of Clay Center, KS; Roy Baker of Oak Hill, KS; Maude Olive (Mrs. Glen) Adee of Lamar, KS; and Floyd Baker of Willow Springs, MO. Also, seventeen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. For forty-four years Mr. and Mrs. Baker lived on the same farm near Oak Hill, enjoying the sunshine and rain of the many summers and braved the snows and storms of winter. Success did not spoil them, reverses and disappointments made them only more kind, sympathetic and helpful to those about them who loved and appreciated them very much. In the last few years, the infirmities of age overtook and made inroads on their rugged pioneer forms and about two years ago they went to Clay Center to make their home with the daughter, Mrs. Walter Hawes. On June 18th last year they celebrated 60th wedding anniversary. Only a short time later, August 7th Mrs. Baker was called by the summons of Him who is above us all. And on January 27, 1935, Mr. Baker answered the call to the same appointment to meet his God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who they both learned to love in their youth; and who they trusted and leaned on very heavily in their declining years. Gone but not forgotten. We appreciated deeds and cherish their memories. May we all profit by their example. A short funeral service was held in the Schwensen Funeral Home in Clay Center, January 29 conducted by Rev. Elmer H. Bleam. Mrs. James Goheen and Mrs. Earnsbarger sang two very appropriate hymns, with Mrs. Arlie Yeaney at the piano. At 2 o'clock another funeral service was held in the Oak Hill Presbyterian Church conducted by the pastor Elmer Herman Bleam, assisted by a quartet composed of Mrs. Jim Goheen, Mrs. Earnsbarger, Mrs. Omar Ullysses Need, and Mrs. E. Clemmons. Mrs. Arlie Yerny played piano. They sang some of the favorite hymns of Mr. and Mrs. Baker. Burial was made in the Rose Meron Cemetery by the side of his beloved companion, the Oak Hill Odd Fellow Lodge having charge of the services at the grave.
