Mercer, son of John and Harriett Mercer was born Feb. 10, 1850 near Douds and departed this life March 27, 1935 at his home near Douds at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 17 days, having lived his entire life in this community. He was one of a family of eight children of which only one sister, Mrs. J.D. Hootman is living. MERCER James W. Mercer, son of John and Harriett Mercer was born Feb. 10, 1850 near Douds and departed this life March 27, 1935 at his home near Douds at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 17 days, having lived his entire life in this community. He was one of a family of eight children of which only one sister, Mrs. J.D. Hootman is living. He was married Oct. 10, 1872, to Mary Channell, and to this union were born ten children, three of whom preceded him in death, two sons in infancy and Weltha, age 7 years. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Roy Stewart of Libertyville, Mrs. E.A. Nelson of Hamilton, Ill., and Mrs. Alva Foglesong of Auburn, Wash.; and four sons, Alva of Gilroy, Calif., Ed of Packwood and John and George at home. Also 19 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He had always enjoyed the best of health until a few years ago when his sight began to fail, this affliction he patiently accepted as inevitable. He was a kind and loving husband and father and a good neighbor and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran church northeast of Douds, in charge of the Rev. J.C. Austin, and burial in the Zion Lutheran cemetery. Source: Van Buren Co.
