Friends may call at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield until 8 a.m. Saturday. Edward S. Mercer was born May 4, 1888, in Van Buren County. He was the son of James and Mary Channel Mercer. He was reared and educated in Van Buren County, and married Iva Ramsey Feb. 1, 1916, at Ottumwa. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Methodist church and served as mayor of Packwood for a number of years. Survivors include his widow; four daughters, Mrs. Dale Myers and Mrs. Dean Marshal, both of Packwood; Mrs. Walter Huddleston, New London; and Mrs. Merl Nelson, Fort Collins, Colo.; four sons, Raymond, Glendale, Calif.; Dale, Burbank, Calif.; Gerald, What Cheer; and Richard, Salisbury, Md.; also 33 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a twin sister, Margaret Stewart, Fairfield. He was preceded in death by two sons, two great-grandchildren, three sisters and three brothers. ***Note: This obit states that Margaret Mercer Stewart was Edward's twin. Her birth year is listed as 1889 and is consistent with census records. Those records indicate that Edward's birth year was 1889, also. However, 1888 is listed as his birth year on his gravestone, and the same date is listed in his obituary. The two were likely twins, and their most logical birth year is 1889.
