Based on obituary, marriage, and census information it now appears that Jennie was married at least three times, but only the latter two spouses are named in her obituary. Married on October 6, 1941 in Phelps county, Mo., to Forrest V. Bennett, using the "Ratcliff" married name instead of the "Smitherman" maiden name. Married on October 16, 1946 in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Luther H. Fear, presumably also using the "Bennett" married surname instead of the "Smitherman" maiden name. Her Evergreen cemetery listing recorded the "Bennett" surname as if it were her maiden name; she was buried in Evergreen cemetery in the same plot as Forrest V. Bennett (a Bennett family plot). Her husband Luther H. Fear died in 1996 and was also buried in the same plot; he and Jennie share a common headstone, while Forrest has an individual headstone. ----------- Ottumwa Courier August 29 or 31, 1987 Jennie Fear Jennie B. Fear, 84, of 402 Tacoma died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1987, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center. She was born on Feb. 21, 1903, in Wilson County, Kan., to Hallie and Lulu Story Smitherman. She worked for Mercer Printing Company for 43 years prior to her retirement in 1985. She was a member of First Christian Church and sang in the choir for 42 years. She married Forrest V. Bennett, and he died in 1944. On Oct. 16, 1946, she married Luther H. Fear in Ottumwa. She is survived by her husband of Ottumwa; a daughter, Mary Alice Graves (sic. Mary Alyce Graves is name on inscription in Evergreen cemetery in Fairfield, Iowa) of Ottumwa; a son, Charles Ratcliff of Pinole, Calif.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Hallie E. Smitherman of Halfway, Mo., three sisters, Georgia Preston of Kansas City, Mo., Florence Loun of Kansas City, Kan., and Dorothy Benefial of Cabool, Mo. The service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, the Rev. Neil Guy officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield. The casket will remain at Johnson Funeral Chapel until 11 a.m. Tuesday. Visitation will begin at noon today, the family will be at the funeral chapel 7-8:30 p.m. today. A memorial has been established to First Christian Church of Ottumwa.
