Huisman was born in Emden, Germany, on October 17, 1868. He came to the United States when he was 15 years old on his brother's ship where he helped peel potatoes and scrub the deck. For a time Harry lived with a brother in Illinois. He came to South Dakota in 1888. He married Jennie Braak in 1892 at Lennox, South Dakota. Jennie Braak was born in Grundy County, Iowa on March 28, 1875. Harry and Jennie Huisman lived on a farm near Worthing, South Dakota for some years. They had fourteen children, of whom 4 daughters died in early childhood. Their other ten children were: Bernard-died in service February, 1918. Sylvia-married Art Miles-died 1945. Jay-married Bernice Hufsmith who died in 1959, then married Blanche Murphy-died 1973. Harry-married Pauline Taylor. Helen-married Elmer Parsons. Ray-never married. Alice-married Walter C. Johnson. Doris-married Bill Fields, then Eddie Boren. Dean-married Elaine Gaudig. Enid-married Jay Nation. Harry Huisman moved his family to Hand County in 1916 where they lived in Miller. In 1917 they moved to a farm in Glendale Township, Section 27. Jennie Huisman was a midwife and assisted with the birth of many babies while they lived in Glendale Township. Harry was a carpenter and built a barn, granary, hog and hen house on the home place. He also bult the second Glendale Church after the first one blew down. He was a long-time treasurer of the Glendale School District. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Huisman remained on the Glendale farm until they retired and moved to Miller in the late 30's. Harry Huisman died on July 6, 1953. His wife, Jennie Braak Huisman, died April 24, 1957. Both of these Glendale Township pioneers are buried in the GAR Cemetery in Miller. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
