Sterling, one of the community's most highly respected citizens, died at his home on the Johnson's Creek Road last Friday afternoon, following an illness of some weeks. Born in this community March 18th, 1858, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Sterling, and was the husband of the late Josephine E. Sterling. Mr. Sterling was for many years a waterman, and then later in his life he combined that with farming, finally devoting all his time to agricultural pursuits. He was a man of integrity, of energy, conscientious, an agreeable companion, devoted to his family, a fine husband and father. In his nearly one hundred years of living he witnessed a trend of events which few people were, or are, destined to see. It might be said that during his lifetime the nation "grew up," engaged in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, the Mexican Border clash, World Wars I and II, and the Korean conflict, brought forth the airplane and automobile and hundreds of electrical gadgets, enjoyed tremendous prosperity and was at times beset by serious depressions. In all the change and conflict Mr. Sterling went his way serenely, raising his family, visiting with his friends, helping those who needed assistance, not caring for the frivolities of life but secure in his belief that American common sense and the energetic direction of its potentials would maintain its freedom and enable it to overcome depressions and raise itself in prosperous strength. He was proud and content to be a citizen of the nation that was making history, offered asylum to the down trodden of other nations, gave every man an opportunity for a useful and peaceful existence, and rewarded those who were careful, competent, honest, and industrious. Funeral services were held at his home at 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Leslie E. Werner, pastor of Asbury Methodist Church. Interment was in the Asbury Cemetery. Surviving him are one daughter, Mrs. Hattie Daugherty of Crisfield, and three sons, Mr. Wilmer T. Sterling of Crisfield, Mr. Maurice J. Sterling, now a resident of Christobal, in the Panama Canal Zone, and Mr. Charles E. Sterling of Crisfield. The Crisfield Times, Crisfield, Maryland, Friday, July 15, 1955, p. 10
