Jerry was born May 8, 1932 in Imogene, IA to Thomas Franklyn Smith and Nellie Lavern Shaffar He attended school in Tabor, IA graduating from high school in 1951. He served in the U. S. Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War, one year of that being in Japan. Jerry was married to Joy Byington in 1953. To this union sons Joseph, Mark and Stephen were born. A daughter, Laura Jean, died when three days old. Jerry married Ellen (Thieman) Asmus in 1967. Ellen had a daughter Kathy. Jerry was involved in the packing house industry for thirty one years. He had part ownership in NebraskaLand Meats in Norfolk, Nebraska. He was on the board of directors at the Bank of Norfolk in Norfolk, Nebraska. Jerry enjoyed restoring Farmall tractors. The love of gardening consumed him every spring. Any fishing trip, whether it be to Canada, Alaska or on the Missouri River, were always something he looked forward to doing. He loved being at the farm where he had built a cabin. Many good times were spent there with grandchildren and friends having fun horseback riding and swimming in the pond. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Laura Jean, sister Naomi Smith and her husband Richard; sister Clara Nebelsick and brother-in-law Carl Leffingwell. He is survived by wife, Ellen of Sidney, IA; son Joseph Smith and his wife Julie of Norfolk, NE; son Mark Smith and his wife Robyn of Homer, AK; son Stephen Smith and his wife Arlene of Hamburg, IA; daughter Kathy Starnes and her husband Mark of Jasper, MO; grandchildren Michael and wife Wendy; Travis, Justine and husband Justin, Ashley, Sheena, Alex, and Sonia; great grand children, Jeremy, Jordan, Tristan, Dara and Jesse; sister Norma Leffingwell of Tabor, IA., brother Vern Smith of Colorado Springs, CO; brother Lewis Smith and wife Eileen of Sidney, IA; brother Dwight Smith and wife Madonna of Tabor, IA; brother-in-law Larry Nebelsick of Nebraska City, NE; sister-in-law Barbara Thomsen and husband Gailyn of Bloomington, IL; numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
