He married Emilie Penner, and they were blessed with five children: Helen, Erna, Ruth, Elsie and John. When Johann was born, the German language was used in church and at home. He was 36 at the time, farming on his own account at Route 1, Beatrice, Nebraska, and was married to Emmiline (later known as Emilie).
