Read More	SUDDEN DEATH OF ESSEX CITIZEN ALFRED SKALLBERG PASSED AWAY VERY SUDDENLY SUNDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 1 FUNERAL HELD WEDNESDAY Like a bolt from a clear sky came the news of the death of Mr. Alfred Skallberg which occurred at his home in this city Sunday morning at 7:30. He arose about six o'clock and after a few moments returned to his bed telling his wife that he was sick. She said she would attend to the fires and she and Melvin who was at home did what they could to relieve him and he said he felt better. Mrs. Skallberg went to the basement to look after the furnace and while in the basement heard a sound as of someone gasping for breath. She returned immediately and arrived at the bed side just as her husband was passing away. Dr. Okerlin was called, but he was dead when he arrived and after an examination stated that death was caused from sudden heart trouble. Mr. Skallberg died without suffering any pain and his passing was like the blowing out of a candle. Alfred Skallberg was born in Sweden, September 19, 1856 and at the time of his passing was 69 years, 2 months, and 12 days old. He came to America when but nineteen years of age landing on April 22, 1875 coming directly to Page county where he has lived since, on a farm east of town until twelve years ago last February when he and Mrs. Skallberg came to Essex to live. He was united in marriage March 5, 1884 to Miss Augusta Hart. To this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters. The sons are John, Paul, Albert, and Melvin. The daughters are Nora, Mrs. Willie Westman; Mabel, Mrs. Elmer Almquist; Mildred, Mrs. Joe Peterson; Dora, Mrs. Paul Rydberg, all of them residents of this community and all were present at the funeral. Besides the wife and children, the deceased leaves one brother, August Skallberg of Wausa, Nebraska; three sisters, Mrs. Christine Swanson of Shenandoah, Mrs. Eric Joneson of Creston, and Mrs. Fred Nelson of Council Bluffs and twenty one grandchildren besides other relatives and friends. Mr. Skallberg was a member of the Mission Church. When on the farm he was a member of the Fremont Congregation and when he came to Essex, Transferred his membership to the church here He was a devout Christian and a regular attendant at the church services and gave liberally of his means toward its support The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock from the home and from the Mission Church at two, conducted by Rev. N. I. Nelson, pastor of the Fremont congregation. The music at the funeral services were by Willie and Anton Peterson Mrs. Eric Lind, and Mrs. Reuben Lindburg who sand his favorite hymns. The pall bearers were his four sons, and his two older sons-in-law, Willie Westman and Elmer Almquist. The remains were laid to rest in the Essex Cemetery. Those who attended the funeral from a distance were, Mr. and Mrs. Jones of Creston, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nelson, Mrs. Earl Baker, and Mrs. Farms of Council Bluffs, August Skallberg of Wausa, Nebraska, John Erickson of Wakefield, Nebraska, and Mrs. Christine Swanson of Shenandoah.
