Mabel Elvira (Skalberg) Almquist was born December 15, 1893, on a farm in Page County east of Essex; she was one daughter of eight children born to Alfred and Amanda (Hart) Skalberg. Mabel Elvira (Skalberg) Almquist was born December 15, 1893, on a farm in Page County east of Essex; she was one daughter of eight children born to Alfred and Amanda (Hart) Skalberg. At an early age, Mabel was baptized and confirmed at the Fremont Covenant Church east of Essex. She was united in marriage with F. Elmer Almquist on June 10, 1914, at the Fremont Covenant Parsonage. To this union, two sons, Marvin and Merrill, and four daughters, Myra, Vandelin, Leola, and Phyllis, were born. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in the Essex vicinity until retiring and moving to Shenandoah in 1963. Mabel was an active member throughout her life of the Essex Covenant Church, where her membership was transferred following her marriage. Due to failing health, she had been a resident of Garden View Care Center the past year and one half. Mabel died Thursday evening, August 4, 1988, at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. She was 94 years of age. Preceding her in death were her parents, four brothers, one sister, her husband Elmer on March 30, 1979, one son, Merrill, one daughter, Leola Morhain Freeman, and one great granddaughter, Lynn Lawson. Survivors include one son, Marvin Almquist and his wife Madelyne of Coin, Iowa. Three daughters; Myra and her husband Hal Livingston of Bedford, Iowa, Vandelin and husband Harold Pearson of Red Oak, Iowa, and Phyllis and husband, Donald Fienup of Shenandoah, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Joe (Mildred) Peterson of Shenandoah, Iowa and Mrs. Paul (Dora) Rydberg of Red Oak, Iowa, and a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Funeral services were held at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Essex, Iowa, on Monday morning August 8. The Rev. Richard P. Lindstrom officiated. A memorial to the church is being established. Hackett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Organist for the service was Mrs. Robert Young. Mrs. Wayne Johnson presided at the memory register. Casket bearers were Brad Almquist, David Anderson, Steve Berning, Fred Fichter, Steve Fienup, and Jerry Morhain. Interment was in the Essex Cemetery in Essex, Iowa. Caring for flowers were Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bengtson and Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Peterson. Ushers were Leland Ackerberg and Fred Olson. Shenandoah Sentential Paper, Shenandoah, Iowa, August 10, 1988.
