Skalberg, 79, lifelong resident of Page County, died early today at the Hand Community Hospital, Shenandoah, Page County, Iowa, where he entered Thursday night. He is survived by his wife, June; one son, Willard of Essex; six grandsons, one granddaughter, and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Melvin Skalberg, Shenandoah, Iowa; four sisters, Mrs. William (Nora) Westman of Essex, Iowa, Mrs. Elmer (Mable) Almquist and Mrs. Joe (Mildred) Peterson of Shenandoah, and Mrs. Paul (Dora) Rydberg, Essex, Iowa. SERVICES HELD FOR JOHN A. SKALLBERG Funeral services for John A. Skallberg, 79, of Essex were held at the Fremont Lutheran Church Sunday with burial in the Essex Cemetery, New Addition, Fifth Row, Lot 10. The retired farmer had a heart attack early in December and was hospitalized in Shenandoah two days before his death, Thursday, January 7, 1965, from a recurrence. He had retired from active farming several years ago, but remained on his place until moving to Essex late in 1961. His wife, June survives, as does a son Willard; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; brother and sister, Melvin Skallberg, Mrs. Elmer Almquist, and Mrs. Joe Peterson, all of Shenandoah. John Skalberg Taken to University Hospital John Skalberg was taken to Iowa City last Friday to the State University Hospital where he is expecting to be operated upon for gall stones. He has been very ill for several weeks. He was accompanied to Iowa City by his wife and brother Paul. Information found in The Essex Independent, January 23, 1925. OBITUARY JOHN ARTHUR SKALBERG John Arthur Skalberg, son of Alfred and Augusta Hart Skalberg was born on a farm near Clarinda, Iowa on January 16, 1885 and departed this life at Hand Community Hospital, Thursday morning January 7, 1965 following an illness of short duration. He had attained the age of 79 years, 11 months, and 21 days. He attended rural school, grew to manhood and lived the greater part of his life in Fremont and Tarkio Townships. For a number of years John farmed and although he retired from active farming, he continued to live on the farm. Besides farming, he was engaged in painting and did mechanic work. He moved into the town of Essex, Iowa in November of 1961, where he made his home until his death. On October 8, 1913, John was united in marriage with June Olson at Shenandoah, Iowa. To this union one son, Willard and one daughter, Marcella, were born. The daughter died in 1933 at the age of 12 years. Mr. and Mrs. Skalberg had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on October 8, 1963. He was baptized and confirmed in the Fremont Covenant Church. Surviving besides his wife, June and son Willard are six grandsons; one granddaughter, and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters: Mrs. William (Nora) Westman and Mrs. Paul (Dora) Rydberg, both of Essex, Iowa; Mrs. Elmer (Mabel) Almquist and Mrs. Joe (Mildred) Peterson, both of Shenandoah, Iowa and a brother, Melvin Skalberg of Shenandoah, Iowa, a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives. Preceding him in death were his parents, daughter and two brothers, Paul and Albert. Funeral services were held at the Fremont Covenant Church, Sunday afternoon, January 10, 1965, with Rev. Earl D. Swanson in charge. Ushers were Harold Anderson and Wesley Lundgren with Mrs. Wayne Almquist in charge of the memory book. Flowers were cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Martin Erickson and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Sederburg. Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Nelson sand "Beyond the Sunset" and "Sometime We'll Understand." Organist was Mrs. Delbert Anderson. Casket bearers were the six grandsons: Glen, John, Robert, Larry, Jerry, and Leslie Skalberg. Burial was in Essex Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were by Carson-Hackett Mortuary. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Glen Skalberg of Sunnyvale, California, Mrs. Jon Peterson of Welton, Arizona, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Olson and family of Des Moines, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Olson and family of Omaha, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. David Black and family of Ames, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Swank of Shenandoah, Iowa.
