John A. Gerdes was born near Anamosa May 19, 1918, to John and Kathryn Andersen Gerdes. He attended Anamosa schools. Gerdes served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II from 1941 to 1945, in the China-Burma-India Theatre. He married Audrey Bonney Feb. 11, 1947, at Wyoming. He worked as a grain truck driver, corn sheller operator. He was employed by Lost Nation Farmers Coop until his retirement in 1981. He lived in Onslow all his life except for 1956 to 1968 when they lived in Lost Nation. He was a member of Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, Wapsi Post no. 473 of Oxford Junction American Legion, and was serving as vice president of Onslow Community Club. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Thomas of Clinton and Steven of Oxford Junction; two daughters, Mrs. Martin (Sheryl) Hokers of Onslow and Judy Taylor of Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Louisa Helgens and Mrs. Claude (Augusta) Appleby, both of Monticello; 16 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
