Description	:	John Briggs Herbert was born in Ohio on December 4th, 1839, the oldest child and first son of John and Lettice Briggs Hebert. I don't have a lot of information on him. He lived at home on his parents farm at least through July of 1870, according to the US Census'. At some point (I need to do more research on this!) he served in Company L of the 3rd Iowa Calvery during the Civil War. In 1880, the Census has him on his own farm in Warren, Wayne County, Iowa. His sister, Francis is living with him. The 1885... Read More	John Briggs Herbert was born in Ohio on December 4th, 1839, the oldest child and first son of John and Lettice Briggs Hebert. I don't have a lot of information on him. He lived at home on his parents farm at least through July of 1870, according to the US Census'. At some point (I need to do more research on this!) he served in Company L of the 3rd Iowa Calvery during the Civil War. In 1880, the Census has him on his own farm in Warren, Wayne County, Iowa. His sister, Francis is living with him. The 1885 Iowa State Census shows he and his sister in the same place and with an Emma Allen, 8, living with them. The 1895 Iowa State Census finds them still on the same farm. John is listed as a Universalist and entitled to vote! Francis is a Baptist and is still keeping house for him. Also living with them is Hampton Herbert, John's brother, Stockton's son. Hampton is 24, in the shoe business, subject to military duty and entitled to vote. In 1900, the Census shows they remain on the farm. Hampton is no longer with them and they now have a servant and a farm hand. Oddly, they're listed on the Allerton, Iowa 1905 State Census. But it's little more than a list of names so not sure why. John died December 4th, 1907 in Corydon, Wayne County, Iowa. He never married. Interestingly, his sister, Francis, married after his death. She was 65! Her groom was 64! The marriage didn't last long. As this was his second marriage, William Brant was buried with his first wife. Francis is buried here, with John.
