Description	:	Francis Elizabeth Herbert was born June 29th, 1843 in Brookfield, Trumbell County, Ohio. She was the daughter of John and Lettice Briggs Herbert. She grew up on her parents farm only leaving sometime before 1880 where the Census says she was living with her brother, John Briggs Herbert on his farm in Warren, Wayne County, Iowa. She lived there as his housekeeper through 1900. Oddly, the 1905 Iowa State Census has them in Allerton, Wayne County, Iowa. But that Census is little more than a list of names. Perhaps John had retired from farming and they moved to Allerton?... Read More	Francis Elizabeth Herbert was born June 29th, 1843 in Brookfield, Trumbell County, Ohio. She was the daughter of John and Lettice Briggs Herbert. She grew up on her parents farm only leaving sometime before 1880 where the Census says she was living with her brother, John Briggs Herbert on his farm in Warren, Wayne County, Iowa. She lived there as his housekeeper through 1900. Oddly, the 1905 Iowa State Census has them in Allerton, Wayne County, Iowa. But that Census is little more than a list of names. Perhaps John had retired from farming and they moved to Allerton? John Briggs died Feb. 5th, 1907. I'm unsure where she lived for the next year and a half but, she surprised everyone by getting married on December 26th, 1908 at the age of 64! Her groom was William S "Uncle Billy" Brant, also aged 64. They had known each other for 35 years. This was his second marriage. He had first been married to a Jennie. Together they had a daughter, Grace Lida. The marriage ended in divorce and Jennie remarried a Davis. Unfortunately, Francis and William's marriage did not last long. Family lore is that she married so that Miss would not be on her tombstone. I have no idea how true that is but there's no Miss! Francis died April 10th, 1926. She is buried with her brother, John Briggs. William lived until 1931 and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Lineville, Wayne County, Iowa.
