Description	:	I don't have a great deal of information yet on John. He was born on January 14th, 1810 in Hampton, Virginia. I've yet to firmly discover his parents but believe his father was another John. I tentatively find him in 1820 and 1830 in Hampton, Elizabeth City, Virginia. He was born on January 14th, 1810 in Hampton, Virginia. I've yet to firmly discover his parents but believe his father was another John. I tentatively find him in 1820 and 1830 in Hampton, Elizabeth City, Virginia. The age is correct but with only the head of the family named, I'm not certain. I know he married Lettice Briggs in Ohio around 1838. Their first son, John Briggs, was born in Ohio abt 1839. The 1840 Census has the family living in Trumbell County Ohio. By the 1850 Census they are in the same place and have added three more children: Stockton (Stacton) C in 1841, Francis E in 1843 and William Solon in 1848. A daughter, Josephine, died in infancy. John is listed as a farmer with a real estate value of $1000.00. The 1856 Iowa State Census is unfortunately not very readable but it states that he had 30 acres. And their last two children were born; Virginia in 1851 and my great-grandfather, Clayton Dick. The census says 3 months old but I'm fairly certain he was born in 1852 and was 3 years old! By the 1860 Census, the family had moved to Jefferson, Wayne County, Iowa. The farm was valued at $6340.00 and John had personal assets of $1882.00 In 1870 they were in the same place, For some reason John had given his wife, Lettie, a huge portion of the value of the farm. His was $2000.00 and hers was $5980.00 His personal assets were $1000.00 and hers were $400.00. John died February 10th, 1875. He and Lettie are buried side by side here in the Corydon Cemetery. I have not yet found where Josephine is buried. There is a memorial marker here for Clayton Dick and Stockton C but they are buried elsewhere. The rest of the family is all buried here.
