John Carl Hoferer, son of William and Barbara, nee Loebel, Hoferer, was born Jan. 22, 1875 at West Point. He was baptized in early infancy in the Lutheran Church there. When he was five years old, the family moved to Knox County. He was confirmed Apr. 8, 1888 in the Zion Lutheran Church in Creighton, a member of the first confirmation class of five confirmed in the old white church building. He attended Creighton High School and clerked in a store in his youth. He was united in marriage to Miss Marie Hoffart of Pierce County on Nov. 18, 1897 and to this union nine children were born, all of whom survive. He and Mrs. Hoferer and their children celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Nov. 18, 1947. Following his marriage he lived on a farm east of Creighton until 1916 when he and his family moved to a farm eight miles southwest of Verdigre, where he lived for a quarter of a century. He was interested in purebred livestock and was successful at the business. He served his district many years as school director and was a long time member of the township board. In 1940 he retired from the farm and purchased a home in Verdigre where he resided until his death. He enjoyed good health until the last few years. He was stricken suddenly Tuesday morning and passed away that evening October 28 at the age of 77. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife, Marie; nine children, Mrs. Ernest (Irma) Pahl, Mrs. Fred (Linda) Nelson and Mrs. Arnold (Elsie) Jessen of Creighton, Mrs. Ben (Laura) Kalal of Waverly, Ia., Harry of Silesia, Mont., John and Mrs. Herman (Florence) Schroeder of Niobrara, Clarence of Joliet, Mont. and Mrs. Verne (Gladys) Riege of Orchard; 23 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Helen Heck of Fond du Lac, Wis., Mrs. Anna Kock of Waverly, Ia. Mrs. Wm. (Linda) Dobson of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. John (Margaret) Dobson of Nampa, Ia.; two brothers, William of Creighton and Henry of Cedar Rapids.
