Mitchell, son of William and Elizabeth Mitchell, was born in Jackson County, Ohio, October 2, 1837. When two years old he moved with his parents to Adams County, Ind. When about thirteen years old his father died. Then his mother moved back to Jackson County, Ohio. In May, 1860, he moved to Wells County, Indiana, then to Huntington county of that state. On December 27, 1863, he was united in marriage to Mary Roberts, daughter of Paul and Mary Roberts, in Huntington County, Indiana. To this union twelve children were born, two of whom have preceded their father in death, one an infant daughter, Ettie Jane, who died September 9, 1875, when less than one year old, the other, Mrs. Florence May Sherley(Schurle), died near Green in 1923. In September, 1869, Mr. Mitchell moved overland in a prairie schooner to Richardson County, Neb, where they lived for two years, thence removing to Clay county, Kansas, where they homesteaded. In 1875, Mr. Mitchell was converted, baptized and joined the Baptist church in Green, Kan., in whose membership he remained until the dissolution of the church some years ago. For some years Mr. Mitchell was sheriff of Clay County and held other positions of public trust in the community at Green. A good husband and kind father, he lived long years in the community where he became well and favorably known, and among friends by whom he will be greatly missed. Besides his wife he leaves to mourn his departure six sons, David of DeWitt, Neb., Paul and John H. of Green, Kan., William of Oldsburg, Kan., Charles Elmer of Ottawa, Kan., and James of Clifton, Kan.; four daughters, Mrs. Cynthia Ann Brooks of Meriden, Kan., Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Book of Chadron, Neb., Mrs. Levina Shiffman of Bay City, Ore., and Mrs. Manda Ellen Terry of Palmer, Kan.; forty grandchildren and twenty seven great-grandchildren; besides a host of true and trusted friends all over Clay county and elsewhere. Mr. Mitchell departed this life from the family residence a mile and one-half south of Green on Tuesday morning, February 9, at 8:45 at the age of eighty eight years, four months, and seven days. After a short service of scripture reading and prayer at the family home at 1:30, funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Episcopal church in Green, Thursday. Rev. W. Harley Smith, pastor of the First Baptist church in Clay Center, in charge. Rev. Keck of the M.E. church at Green assisted in the service. The Ebenezer quartette consisting of August H. Schmidt, Albert Klein, Harry Musselman and Phillip Heer, provided suitable music at both home and church. At the home they sang, "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and at the church, "Beautiful Isle,", "Beautiful Land", and Going Down the Valley." Interment was made in the Green Cemetery.
