He was assisting with the evening chores when he had a heart attack and passed away immediately. Definite arrangements for the funeral are not yet complete, pending the arrival of relatives. Deceased is one of the outstanding farmers of his section and a most highly respected citizen beloved by all who knew him. He was born in Richland County Wisconsin, June 8 (sic), 1871. ====================== The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, February 14, 1946; pg. 1 John Crandell Reeve, the son of James Clement and Mary Reeve, was born June 28, 1871 in Richland county (sic), Wisconsin, and departed this life from his home east of Nelson on February 5th, 1946 at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 8 days. He came with his parents to Nuckolls county (sic) in 1874, and settled upon a homestead 4 1/2 miles northeast of Nelson. In February, 1899 he started in the Blacksmith business and continued in this occupation until the spring of 1913 when he moved to his present home. He was a member of the Nebraska National Guards and in February, 1891 he went with his Company to Rushville, Nebraska during the uprising of the Indians at the Pine Ridge Agency. On December 12, 1906 he was united in marriage to Miss Gertrude Newton and to this happy union five children were born -- three sons and two daughters. Those who are left to mourn his passing, besides his loving and faithful wife, are the four living children: Russell Wayne and Clement Newton of Nelson, Nebr., Mrs. Kathryn Noramczyk of Kankekee (sic), Illinois; and Clarence Ross of the United States Army, stationed at Williams Field, Chandler, Arizona. One daughter, Marcella, passed away February 8, 1937. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Amanda Dunken of Grand Island, Nebr. and four grand-daughters: Shirley, Gwendolyn, Bonnie and Marceline Reeve. His parents and all other brothers and sisters have preceded him in death. John Reeve was a good man, a loving husband, a devoted father and a helpful neighbor. He loved to be in God's great out of doors and through the years has made a great contribution toward the production of food for humanity. For 32 years he has raised and developed dairy cattle and for twelve years he and his sons have helped supply the City of Nelson with milk. Brother Reeve joined the Methodist Church of Nelson in 1926 during the pastorate of V.R. Beebe, and for 20 years had kept the welfare of the church in his mind, attending the services and giving to the world-wide program of the church. He loved the church because he had Christ in his heart. How beautiful the poem, "The Village Blacksmith", by Henry W. Longfellow, fits into his life. His brow is wet with honest sweat, He earns what 'er he can, And looks the whole world in the face, For he owes not any man. Toiling, rejoicing, sorrowing, Onward through life he goes; Each morning sees some task begun, Each evening sees it close; Something attempted, something done, Has earned a night's repose. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church (sic) Saturday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Clarence V. Powell. The music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Bertha Portwood, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. F. Murphy, and J.E. Portwood. Lowell Powell sang a solo at the close of the sermon, entitled "I Won't Have to Cross Jordan Alone." Mrs. Henry Hite presided at the piano. The burial took place in the Nelson cemetery (sic).
