Harris in Fort Benton on Jan. 23, 1934. He grew up on the family farm on the Highwood Bench. After graduating from high school, he briefly attended Colorado State University. He received a bachelor's degree in 1956, and a master's degree in 1964, from Montana State College at Bozeman. In 1956, he married Beverly Mae Rose of Sheridan, Wyo., in Helena. For the next several years, John taught science at various Montana schools, including in Ennis, Big Sandy, Gardiner and Helena. In the mid-1970s, he purchased a farm near Belt and returned to his first vocation, farming. John and Beverly traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and to Europe, Japan, Thailand and Mexico. John had an abiding interest in Western history and was proud to be a fourth-generation Montanan and a member of the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers. His interests included rock hounding, exploring for artifacts throughout the state and collecting antiques. After retiring from farming, he returned to college to pursue a doctorate in education. In genealogy, John found a hobby that was both rewarding and challenging. He spent much time researching family history and sharing the information he gathered. John was preceded in death by his son, Robert Dean, and his mother and father. His survivors include his children, John F. Harris, David Harris, Beth (Michael) Hruska and Peggy (Jeff) Larson; his former wife, Beverly Harris; his sister, Carol (John) Russell; five grandchildren, Kyla Harris, Sarah and Melody Larson, and Shelby and Joseph Hruska, and two stepgrandchildren, Jeffery and Joshua Larson. John had been in declining health for several years. The family would like to thank the staff and doctors at Missouri River Manor who provided him with care these past years.
