Harris, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Harris, Montana and Fort Benton pioneers, died Sunday morning at the St. Clare hospital after being a patient there about two weeks. He was not quite 52 years old. John D. Harris was born Sept. 16, 1903, and had spent virtually his entire life in and near Fort Benton. He graduated from Chouteau county high school with the class of 1923 and was a member of the strong high school teams of that period, including the championship basketball team of 1923 that placed third in Montana. John Harris also attended Culver Military Academy in Indiana and graduated from the University of Washington. He was employed in this city in the Chouteau County Bank and in the courthouse for several years, serving a term as county treasurer, and in 1935 began farming on Highwood bench. He was married Sept. 17, 1932, to Agnes Foster, and they had since lived at the farm and in Fort Benton. Survivors include his wife; a son, John, senior at Montana State College, Bozeman; daughter, Carol Lee, student in local schools; two brothers, Howell Harris of Highwood, and Ed W. Harris of Fort Benton; three sisters, Mrs. Ann Phelan, Fort Benton; Mrs. Nell Patterson, Whittier, Calif.; and Mrs. Mary Wilson, Escondido, Calif. Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. from the Benton Funeral Home chapel and interment was in Riverside cemetery. John's many friends in this county will extend sympathy to the family in their loss.
