Groon Had Resided In This Community For Many Years J.G. Groon departed this life at the home of a neighbor in Akron, Iowa, last Friday afternoon, April 22, 1955, as the result of a sudden heart attack. At the time of his passing he was 81 years, 3 months and 6 days of age. John Gerhart Groon, son of Gerhart John and Anna Marie Groon, was born in Emden, Germany, January 16, 1874. He was baptized during infancy, and when but two years of age he came with his parents to America and to the Akron community. He later was confirmed in the Lutheran church. He was united in marriage with Miss Nellie Johnson on her birthday, July 4, 1900. The wedding took place in Elk Point, S.D: If he had lived until this summer they would have celebrated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary. He farmed in the Akron community, particularly in Sioux Valley Township, Union County, S.D., until 1940, when they moved into Akron, where he lived until his death. While living in Union County, S.D., they affiliated with the Union Creek Lutheran Church and he was a member of this church at the time of his death. Mr. Groon's personality and way of living was more of the quiet and unassuming, but he definitely made his contribution to the life of his own family and to the lives of others in many acts of love and friendliness; as typified by the very last act of his life doing a favor for his neighbor. Those who survive to mourn his departure include: His wife; his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Abraham, of Sioux City; his son, Clifford, of Akron; his three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Pollock of Le Mars, Iowa; Mrs. Lena Nutbrok, of Willow Lake, S.D., and Mrs. Mary Nelson, of Parker, S.D.; his brother, Henry; of Fairview, S.D., eleven grandchildren, many other relatives and his many friends. Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Union Creek Lutheran Church, Rev. David J. Roy officiating. Mrs. Victor Clark was soloist and Mrs. Henry Fickbohm was organist. Casket bearers were Lowell Nelson, Emery Powell, Robert Nelson, Arnold Powell, Eldon Seely and Archie Powell, Burial was in Union Creek cemetery.
