He married Anna Mary Martin and had a little daughter Lena when Mary passed away about 1868 in Clark County, Illinois. It was in Bedford, Taylor County, Iowa where he married his second wife Julia Ann Anthony October 26, 1874. The 1880 Five Creeks, Clay County, Kansas Census lists John Halbedel, 28?, Julia, 27, and daughter "Lucynda", 6 months. The family story is that John was killed by a bull. It is true, but he lived years after his initial injury. See newspaper articles below. His veterans record says he applied for invalid status April 21, 1886. Julia applied for a widow's pension April 5, 1900. The Times, Clay Center, Kansas, Thursday, July 19, 1894--- TERRIBLY TRAMPLED John Halbedel, a well-to-do farmer of Five Creeks Township, was severely injured by an enraged bull Tuesday morning. Mr. Halbedel was walking through his pasture when the bull attacked him. Halbedel, who is a powerful man, caught the animal by one of the horns and nose and fought for his life, but becoming tired out he was finally thrown to the ground and horribly bruised and gored by the infuriated beast. His ribs were broken from the spinal column and his left side literally smashed to jelly. His not returning to the house caused his family to search for him and when found, the bull was standing over Mr. Halbedel's body. With pitchforks as weapons the animal was driven away, and unable to raise the wounded man the wife and children rolled him on a blanket and dragged him several hundred yards to the house. Dr. Porter, who was in this city attending court, was summoned, but he could do nothing more than give temporary relief. The Times, Clay Center, Kansas, May 25, 1899--- John Halbedel, aged 58, was adjudged insane in probate court this morning. The malady is pronounced as a case of melancholia with suicidal tendencies, which first became noticeable about a year ago. Mr. Halbedel comes from Idana neighborhood where he is well known and has been for years considered one of Clay county's best farmers. Four years ago he was severely injured in a fracas with a vicious bull and it is to these injuries his present affliction is probably due.
