Hockman, candidate for the Common Pleas judgeship for this district, died suddenly at his home at 300 East High St. on Thursday evening at 8 o'clock, death being due to unknown causes, but probably due to electrocution. He was in the best of health and spirits when he returned from his office Thursday evening. After supper, he intended going to a meeting and preparatory to going to the meeting, went into the bathroom carrying a tin cup of water to shave. He switched on the electric light and at the same time it is thought either put his hand on the zinc or set the tin cup on the east side of the sink, either of which would have completed the circuit, the zinc being grounded. He fell to the floor. His wife ran to his assistance it exclaiming "why what's the matter." He replied, "I don't know." The physician was immediately called and arrived within 15 minutes, but death had taken place before his arrival. Two other physicians were also called. All during the evening the electric wires between the Hockman home and the church appear to be burning. Len Tuttle received a severe shock earlier in the evening while turning on the lights. Andrew Baringer switched on the light in the basement of his home about 15 minutes earlier than the Hockman accident and the bulb burst in his hand, filling his face full of glass, burning his hand severely and throwing him to the floor. These accidents all appeared within an hour of each other and in the same neighborhood which indicate that the electric light wires were crossed with an arc light wire. John Hockman was born in Tiffin Township, Defiance County, June 2, 1856. He first attended the public schools in the country and after a course in the high school there, studied for a time in the high school at Stryker and later at the University at Ada. The necessary means for pursuing this extended course were obtained by teaching in the intervals of study and he engaged in this occupation regularly when school days were end-port and from 1884 and 1885 served in the same capacity at Fayette, Ohio. He then return to Evansport and was in charge of the schools until 1890. During these years he gained a high reputation as an educator and for five years was a member of the board of examiners of Defiance County, serving as president for two years and a secretary for the same length of time. From 1885 until 1890 he read law with Harris & Cameron and while thus fitting himself for future honors was elected in 1887 to the office of justice of the peace. In June that year he was admitted to the Bar and began to practice at Defiance, continuing alone until July 19, 1893 when a partnership was formed with W. H. Hubbard. In 1894 he was admitted to practice before the United States Federal Courts. In 1896 he was elected to the office of probate judge by a large majority. June 18 of this year he was nominated to the Common Pleas judgeship of this district at Bryan. June 28, 1883, he was married to Miss Julia F. Ackerman at Evansport. To this union three children were born: Port and Florence, who survive and one son Paul, who died in infancy. The judge is also survived by a wife, an aged mother, Mrs. Carolyn Rath of Brunersberg, one brother and one sister, Frank Hockman of Brunersberg and Mrs. Frank Rath of Tiffin Township. The judge was a member of the St. Paul's Methodist Church of Defiance and of the Omega Lodge, Eastern Star and Knights of Pythias. Politically he has always been a Democrat, one of the party's staunchest and truest workers. He has always been active and influential as a delegate to the judicial state and congressional conventions. He was a political speaker who ranked high among the best. Among his friends which were Legion he was loved and respected as a man, the finest of whose character raised him head and shoulders above the multitude. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home at 300 East High St. - Defiance Daily Crescent, October 4, 1910.
