He was born October 6, 1921, the sixth of seven children to Dutch immigrant parents, John and Helena. The family owned a dairy farm in Sparta, Michigan but the cold winters took such a toll on his father's health that they relocated to California in 1930. The Sacramento Valley appealed to John Sr. so he purchased the Afton General Store near Princeton, which the family operated until 1946. During that time, Johnnie attended Afton Elementary School and then graduated from Princeton High School. The family had a strong work ethic and the boys grew accustomed to heavy manual labor. One of Johnnie's first jobs was running the Princeton ferry. When Johnnie's family began attending the Richvale Evangelical Free Church in 1938, one particular young lady, Lois Nelson, caught his eye. They began dating and in 1941 they married and established a home in Richvale. Johnnie began farming rice on some of the Nelson land with his brother-in-law, Oliver Bjorklund. Both partnerships proved solid. His marriage lasted 52 years until Lois passed away from cancer in 1993. His business partnership with Oliver also lasted 50 years. The only interruption in Johnnie's farming career came during World War II when he was drafted into the Navy in 1943. A tragic automobile accident involving his wife and son prompted an early discharge due to family hardship. Lois and Johnnie raised five children: Raymond (Twila) Bultema of Richvale, Cheryl (John) Needham of Seattle, Phyllis (Jeff) Atchison of Chico, Barbara (Gary) Engle of Fair Oaks and Jill (Darryl) Hayes of Elk Grove. They provided a stable, secure home for their children. While Johnnie's life demonstrated the value of hard work, he also provided plenty of play time for his family. This included annual camping trips, numerous winter break vacations and a lot of summer boating and picnicking. Family meal times were special and the kids remember lingering at the table while he told stories of the good old days. In 1994, Johnnie married Dorothy Grell-Lindahl, recently widowed herself. She brought two sons, Daniel and Thomas Grell to the marriage. They enjoyed 17 years together during which time they were able to travel quite a bit. They eventually became snowbirds with a winter home in Arizona. Dorothy was a faithful, loving companion, who provided much of the assistance Johnnie required with his declining health in the last few years. Between them Johhnie and Dorothy had 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. There were many hobbies and activities Johnnie enjoyed; among them playing and watching baseball, hunting, flying, bowling, wood carving, boating. He served on numerous agricultural boards and committees and he was a member of the Richvale EFC. His sense of humor remained even when his memory failed. Johnnie had an abiding faith, gratitude for the abundant life God gave him, and a secure hope in the glorious future that awaited him. He is survived by one brother, Jim Bultema; his wife, Dorothy, and all his children and their offspring. ~~~ Bultema Brothers were featured in article in Sierra News, Vol 4 No 2, February 1957, as "Bultema Brothers Succeed Thru Diversification". Carroll, Don and Jim were farming some 4000 acres of field crops, while also running 2000 head of sheep and managing their own rice drier and bonded warehouse. Having begun with 1100 acres in 1946, their operation grew, with rice, barley, wheat, oats, corn and vetch the major crops. Fourth brother John was listed as farming with Oliver Bjorklund in Richvale.
