Crooks, son of Robert and Elizabeth Crooks, was born in Noble county, Ohio, Oct. 4, 1854, and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mae Lovell, near Lacona, Iowa, April 21, 1936, at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 17 days. He was married to Mary E. Nyswonger on March 28, 1875. To this union nine children were born, three daughters and six sons. His wife preceded him in death 17 years ago, also two children, one daughter, Clarcy Eubank, and one son, Jim, who died two weeks ago. The seven children left to mourn the loss of a father are: William, of Lacona; Clark, of Rapid City, So. Dak.; Mrs. Viola Killen, of Osceola; Jesse and Jasper, of Norwood; Floyd Crooks and Mrs. Mae Lovell, of near Lacona. All were with him at the time of his demise except Clark, who was unable to be present. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Isabel McClain, of New Virginia, and two brothers, Criswell and M. O. Crooks, of Lacona, and 28 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends who mourn the loss of a loved one and friend. He had lived in the same community for 63 years and was well known and won the confidence and regard of the entire community. He was ever a devoted companion, father and friend. He was converted 22 years ago and had lived a faithful and consistent Christian life. He often expressed the desire to go. The last four years of his life he had lived with his daughter, Mrs. Mae Lovell, who, with her family, did all that loving hands could do to relieve his sufferings. William Crooks came in January to help care for his father and was with him constantly until God called him home where suffering is no more. Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Elder J. Robinson, of Lacona, were held April 23, at Graceland chapel near Norwood, with burial in the Graceland cemetery. Obituary courtesy of Charles M. Wright
