Johann Ludwig Kriese was born in Jaegersburg, Posen, Prussia on October 7, 1841, the youngest son of Johann Friedrich and Dorthea Luise Anklam Kriese. Lewis died in 1894, not 1893. Johann Ludwig Kriese was born in Jaegersburg, Posen, Prussia on October 7, 1841, the youngest son of Johann Friedrich and Dorthea Luise Anklam Kriese. Johann had a sister named Auguste Emilie and a brother named Johann Ferdinand. As a child, Johann Ludwig called himself Ludwig, probably to distinguish him from his father and brother who were also named Johann. When Ludwig emigrated to the United States, he anglicized his name to Louis. Although he sometimes went by the name of John Louis Kriese, most people knew him as Louis Kriese. Louis married Adeline Marie Polke on May 26, 1870. Adeline was the eldest daughter of August and Henrietta Nickel Polke. Louis and Addie had three children: George August, Edward Albert, and Wilhelm Fredrick. On September 18, 1878, Addie died. Finding himself with three young sons to raise, Louis wasted no time in marrying again. On February 27, 1879, Louis married Christena Allman. Christena had been born on May 23, 1855 to Gottfried and Elizabeth Akerman Allman. The Allmans had come from Bavaria and had prospered on their farm northwest of Hedrick. Louis and Christena's marriage produced seven children: Elizabeth, Philip F., Katherine Christina, Louise May, John Louis, Ethel Phoebe, and Virdon Clarence. Louis and Christena moved to Dahlonega shortly after Philip's birth, and then moved back to Hedrick where Louis established a flour and feed store. Probably due to mounting financial pressures and depression, Louis became desperate. On May 21, 1894, after having lunch with his family, Louis went to his store and shot himself in the head. Louis's son, Philip, found Louis and called for help, but Louis was gone. A subsequent board of inquiry determined Louis's death to be suicide. In the aftermath of Louis's death, Christena raised her children successfully although she struggled mightily. Christena died at the family home in Hedrick, on September 4, 1941. Because of financial constraints, Louis's tombstone was likely placed years after his death. Notice the year of death on his tombstone is mistakenly engraved as 1893.
