The mine was not supposed to contain any dangerous gases, and water in the bottom was being bailed out. About five o'clock Monday John Marshall, son of the proprietor of the mine, prepared to go down to resume work, which had been abandoned but a short time before. His father warned him and said he had better test the air first, but as there was plenty of water there the young man laughed at his father's fear and had himself lowered. At the bottom he commenced to bale water, but suddenly fell over without warning of any kind. John Trenell saw what had happened and immediately had himself lowered to help young Marshall. As Trenell was attempting to pull Marshall into the bucket he (Trenell), was also overcome with the gas and fell head foremost into the water and was either suffocated or drowned. A third man that went to their assistance was also overcome, but was hauled back and rescued. The two men first in the shaft were dead when taken out. John Marshall, son of the mine owner, was a young man of about 19, unmarried. John Trenell (sic), the other victim, was about 25, and married.
